Department Summary:
The Boston Children's Hospital Infectious Disease Outpatient Practice provides outpatient consultative evaluation and treatment to children and adolescents with any infectious disease, ranging from common childhood infections in healthy children to unusual, often chronic infections in immunocompromised patients. Our outpatient staff, including several faculty physicians and nurse practitioners, are experienced infectious disease providers with deep subspecialty expertise in a variety of conditions. Our practitioners work closely with referring providers and other subspecialists to provide diagnostic and treatment plans based on current best practice guidelines, practice experience, and individual patient needs.

Key Responsibilities:
OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy) Coordination
  • Coordinate PICC line placements and related care for patients requiring IV antibiotic therapy.
  • Monitor and track weekly laboratory results for OPAT patients.
  • Communicate regularly with home infusion providers, pharmacists, and liaisons, regarding IV medications, treatment plans, and patient needs.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned Infectious Diseases patients and care teams.
  • Facilitate communication between providers, patients, infusion companies, and outside healthcare facilities.
Medication Management
  • Collaborate with Central Pharmacy and Retail Pharmacy regarding medication prescriptions, dispensing, and patient access.
  • Coordinate procurement of specialty and restricted medications, including medications obtained through specialty suppliers (e.g., Bedaquiline).
  • Complete prescription assistance applications and prescription drug card paperwork.
  • Obtain insurance prior authorizations (PA's) for medications and treatments.
  • Assist with medication-related troubleshooting and follow-up.
Care Coordination and Administrative Support
  • Obtain and review laboratory results for Infectious Diseases patients.
  • Check Epic In-Basket Messages throughout the day and triage/respond as appropriate.
  • Fax laboratory orders and clinical documentation to outside facilities as needed.
  • Coordinate and schedule imaging appointments and related follow-up care.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and communication within the electronic medical record.
  • Support continuity of care through timely communication with patients, families, providers, and ancillary services.
Minimum qualifications:
Education:
  • BSN
Experience:
  • 1 year RN experience required, 3+ preferred.
  • Pediatric experience preferred.
License/Certification:
  • MA Registered Nurse (RN) license

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.

Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
