Salary/Compensation Statement:

  • Hourly wage reflects an approximate annual salary of $63,397 - $89,101.
  • New employees may not be placed on the salary schedule higher than any current employee in this classification with the same or greater number of years' relevant experience and education.

Required Qualifications




Required Education:
High school graduation or equivalent.
Required Experience:
Three (3) years of documented industry employment as a full-time general aviation aircraft mechanic which includes substantial experience involving the inspection and repair of all-metal Cessna 152, Piper PA-28, and PA-44 series aircraft and one year of documented work as an authorized inspector or shop foreman in a FAA repair station or as a FAA Maintenance Inspector is required.

  • Inspection Authority

Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an airport security badge.

Position Purpose:
To keep the training fleet for Lane Aviation Academy's Aviation Professional Pilot program in a safe, airworthy condition. This is by the mechanic's own work, assignment of work to other mechanics and, in some cases, referring work to outside providers.
Essential Functions:

  • Responsible to perform, oversee, and/or arrange for: service, scheduled preventive maintenance, and repairs, in order to maintain the airworthiness of the fleet of training aircraft used by Flight Technology to train pilots. This will be based on the mechanic's IA certification.
  • Work will include maintenance or replacement of a wide variety of aircraft components and systems including airframe, power-plant, propellers, including complete raw data weight-and-balance measurements and calculations.
  • Sign off work on aircraft as required by FAA regulations.
  • May complete in-flight evaluations following maintenance or repair work.
  • Assure compliance with all FAA and other applicable regulations.
  • Expedite maintenance and repairs to enhance aircraft availability, while maintaining safety, and maximizing reliability.
  • Keep all records required for aircraft maintenance in a Part 141 training school; all records required by the FAA.
  • Meet and build positive relationships with FAA maintenance inspectors, as well as Lane faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assure that aircraft maintenance and repairs status is kept updated on SkyScheduler or other manner as required by the Dea/Director.
  • Assure aircraft in service have all required documents current, and on board.
  • Lead the work of other part-time or full-time mechanics at Flight Technology (plans work, assigns tasks, trains, provides priorities).
  • Order parts, return cores for reimbursement, track and maintain inventory of parts and supplies as needed to maintain the fleet. Includes keeping itemization of parts and labor records of all maintenance accomplished on each aircraft on a monthly basis.
  • Participate with the Dean/Director and the Chief Flight Instructors in making decisions about the fleet. This includes referring aircraft to contracted specialists when needed, and getting outside help during times of heavy workload. Support the Dean when they send an aircraft to another facility for inspection, or invites Lane AMT faculty to provide quality assurance and safety recommendations.
  • Participate as part of the larger team that makes up the Aviation Academy, including Professional Pilot program, the AMT program, and the UAS training program.
  • Ensure that the aircraft are kept clean and protected from the elements as much as possible.
  • Help educate and, sometimes, re-educate flight instructors and students regarding best practices in the use and care of our aircraft.
  • Work hours as assigned by the Dean/Director to best service student needs. This may include some weekend work.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Dean of the Aviation Academy. Work is performed independently according to industry standards and federal regulations.

This position leads the work of one or more aircraft mechanic positions. This position plans work, assigns tasks, trains, provides priorities and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
Physical strength and agility to lift aircraft parts and components, and to be able to access all portions of the aircraft for inspections and repairs. Also requires visual acuity and hand-eye coordination. Work Safely.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and ability required to maintain the aircraft in our training fleet.


KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Applicable FAA regulations and the ability to stay current on published materials including AD lists and Service Bulletins.
SKILL IN:

  • Using tools, equipment, and materials used in working on aircraft including, but not limited to, hydraulic and mechanical jacks, aircraft scales, electrical and/or mechanical drill motors and rivet guns, electrical multi-meters, spray paint, solvents, anti-corrosion or other liquid chemical pressure-activated guns, wands, nozzles, oxygen/acetylene equipment, powered sanders, saws, grinding wheels, magneto timing lights, differential pressure gauges, spark-plug cleaning and gapping equipment, aircraft tugs, engine hoists and battery carts.
  • Skill in the use of software including, but not limited to, updated publications related to maintaining the aircraft, word processing, spreadsheets, and email.

ABILITY TO:

  • Arrange for a reasonable and organized inventory of parts and equipment to service aircraft.
  • Anticipate and plan for scheduled maintenance as well as address unscheduled repairs.
  • Take initiative in recognizing potential service items; adopt new technologies for tracking and recording maintenance and scheduling, including full use of our SkyScheduler online service.
  • Work constructively and cooperatively with other members of a team.
  • Work with mechanic students to help them gain experience.
  • Interact positively and constructively with flight instructors and students regarding aircraft condition and maintenance.
  • Provide instructions regarding proper care and operation of our aircraft, to instructors and students, in a classroom setting, operate a wide variety of normal and specialized hand tools appropriate to the trade.
  • Conduct engine start, run up, and taxi aircraft without a pilot or instructor on board.
  • Ability to provide own aircraft mechanic tools, standard to this position (subject to agreement).
  • Provide support to employees working to meet accreditation standards through evaluation and assessment of student outcomes.
