Job Grade: R06

Anticipated salary rate: $62,642 to $92,190 per year commensurate with qualifications.

This is a limited-term position and is subject to the availability of funding thereafter. All employment and assignments are ultimately contingent upon available funding, business needs, and your performance of the assignment. Georgia Tech retains the right to terminate this assignment at any time for cause or, in its sole discretion, for convenience; in either case, Georgia Tech's obligation shall be limited to payment for hours and/or days worked before the termination date exactly three years from start date.

The Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience's mission (IBB, https://bioresearch.gatech.edu/) is to build a community across Georgia Tech and its partner institutions that catalyzes, cultivates, and deploys interdisciplinary research and education in bioengineering and biosciences for economic and societal benefit.

Job Summary

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including the execution of experiments, the maintenance of equipment, and the adherence to safety protocols. This position focuses on the technical aspects of laboratory management, requiring strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure that research projects are completed accurately and efficiently. Sets performance goals, participates in evaluations, provides feedback, and informs compensation decisions.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Manage the daily operations of the laboratory by ensuring that experiments are conducted according to established protocols and timelines.

Job Duty 2 -
Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment and materials by performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting technical issues as they arise.

Job Duty 3 -
Conduct experiments and data analysis independently, ensuring that all findings are documented accurately and reported in a timely manner.

Job Duty 4 -
Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, including inventory management, reagent usage, and safety inspections.

Job Duty 5 -
Support compliance with safety regulations by regularly inspecting the laboratory environment and reporting any hazards or safety concerns to the appropriate personnel.

Job Duty 6 -
Assist in the training of new laboratory personnel by providing instruction on equipment usage, safety protocols, and laboratory procedures.

Job Duty 7 -
Monitor the progress of ongoing research projects by compiling and analyzing data to ensure that objectives are met and deadlines are adhered to.

Job Duty 8 -
Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance technical skills and stay updated on best practices in laboratory management.

Job Duty 9 -
Collaborate with researchers to provide technical support and expertise in the design and execution of experimental procedures.

Job Duty 10 -
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Associate's Degree in a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced certification may be preferred or required.

Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in sciences or engineering with 3+ years work experience post MS degree, including cell sorting, or a PhD degree in sciences or engineering with significant experience using cytometers, especially with cell sorting.

Preferred Work Experience:

  • At least three years of related experience operating a cell sorter in core facility environment.

  • Experience with BD cytometers and cell sorter instruments.

  • Experience with imaging and mass cytometry.

  • Experience with FlowJo or other cytometry analysis software.

  • Experience educating research personnel in proper usage of flow cytometers, sorters and related software.

  • Technical knowledge of biosafety procedures and regulations associated with cell sorting.

  • Extensive technical expertise in instrument quality control and routine maintenance, troubleshooting and advising on cell sorting strategies.

  • Experience with sample preparation and cell staining techniques.

  • Experience with operating a cost recovery center within budget, maintaining a billing system and stocking supplies.

  • Prior experience in microscopy, imaging, or a laboratory research environment.

  • Familiarity with fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, or related imaging techniques.

Preferred Certifications:

  • ISAC flow cytometry certification

Preferred Skills:

  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Experience working in a team-based environment.

  • Experience training users on laboratory equipment and techniques and providing troubleshooting support.

  • Flexible hours.
