Essential Job Duties
The primary duties of this position include the following:

  • Lead focused marketing and advertising efforts designed to increase earned revenue, attendance, ticket sales, and program registrations for the department.
  • Develop and execute targeted promotional campaigns for planetarium shows, summer and school-break camps, special events, facility rentals, premium experiences, memberships, and other revenue-generating programs.
  • Manage the department's paid advertising strategy across appropriate platforms, including Meta, Google, digital display, search, and other targeted media channels.
  • Establish campaign objectives, audiences, budgets, timelines, creative needs, and performance measures for priority revenue-generating activities.
  • Maintain a rolling marketing and advertising calendar aligned with show schedules, camp registration periods, seasonal programming, events, and other sales opportunities.
  • Identify the audiences most likely to purchase or register for specific offerings and develop targeted messages and advertising strategies for each.
  • Work with the department staff and graphic design resources to develop advertising creative, promotional graphics, photography, video, landing pages, and other campaign assets.
  • Write or edit promotional copy for digital advertisements, email campaigns, web pages, social media, and other customer-facing communications.
  • Coordinate promotional timing across paid advertising, email, social media, web, public relations, and internal communication channels.
  • Monitor ticket sales, registrations, campaign performance, conversion rates, web traffic, and advertising costs and recommend adjustments to improve results.
  • Track marketing expenditures and evaluate the return on advertising investment for major campaigns.
  • Identify underperforming programs or sales periods and recommend timely promotional interventions to increase participation and revenue.
  • Develop strategies to increase repeat visitation, cross-promotion, and customer conversion between the department's offerings-for example, moving camp families toward memberships, show attendees toward special events, or visitors toward additional paid experiences.
  • Identify opportunities for bundling, seasonal promotion, special offers, audience retargeting, and cross-selling that can increase customer value without unnecessarily discounting the experience.
  • Coordinate with Programs, Guest Relations, Advancement, and other staff to ensure marketing priorities reflect available inventory, program capacity, organizational goals, and revenue opportunities.
  • Provide concise, regular reporting on what is being promoted, what is working, what is not, and where additional marketing investment is warranted.
  • Recommend changes to messaging, pricing promotion, advertising spend, audience targeting, or campaign timing based on performance data.
  • Help the department develop a more disciplined revenue-marketing approach, connecting promotional activity directly to measurable business outcomes.
  • Perform other marketing and promotional duties as assigned in support of the department's earned-revenue and audience-development goals.

Minimum Experience/Education

  • 3-5 years of experience in marketing and/or advertising.


Department Required Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in marketing, advertising, audience development, or revenue-generating communications.
  • Strong understanding of paid digital advertising, including Meta, Google, display, search, and other targeted advertising platforms.
  • Experience developing campaigns designed to drive ticket sales, registrations, attendance, and earned revenue.
  • Ability to translate organizational priorities into focused, measurable marketing campaigns.
  • Experience marketing events, attractions, museums, performing arts, camps, educational programs, entertainment venues, or other consumer-facing experiences.
  • Strong understanding of audience segmentation and targeting, including families, parents, educators, tourists, students, and adult audiences.
  • Experience managing advertising budgets and making informed decisions about media mix, campaign spend, and return on investment.
  • Ability to interpret campaign analytics, web traffic, conversion data, ticket sales, and registration trends and adjust strategy accordingly.
  • Strong copywriting and messaging skills, particularly for short-form advertising, promotional email, web, and social media.
  • Ability to develop clear creative briefs and work effectively with graphic designers, photographers, videographers, and other content creators.
  • Strong project-management skills and the ability to prioritize the highest-return activities within a limited weekly schedule.
  • Comfortable working independently and making recommendations with limited supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain a forward-looking promotional calendar
  • Understanding of brand management and the ability to market individual programs while strengthening the overall department brand
  • Experience with CRM, ticketing, registration, or customer-data systems is preferred
  • Experience in higher education, museums, science centers, attractions, camps, tourism, entertainment, or nonprofit organizations is desirable
  • Familiarity with the Triangle and greater North Carolina consumer and family market is a plus


Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • 3-5 years of experience in marketing and/or advertising.
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics, Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, email marketing platforms, and related marketing technology.
