Position Summary

If you are a recent graduate and want to build your skills
and experience working at an institution of higher education, please consider
the following opportunity.

The Office of Advising Strategies (OAS) is looking for
professional interns to engage in an experience designed to provide
on-the-job training and professional development for recent alumni interested
in working in Academic Advising and Student Success at UNM. This position
serves as a bridge for recent college graduates to careers in fields such as
education, higher education administration, coaching and mentoring, human
resources, counseling, customer service, and public service.

Continuing to build on our current cohort, this
professional will join a team committed to the systematic support of advising
and student success at UNM while gaining new experience to build their
portfolio as a professional. They will be trained by the UNM Advisement
Trainer and may be deployed to various academic or integrated advisement
centers on an as-needed basis. There, they will receive additional training
while supporting the core responsibilities of those centers.

Chosen candidates will also support OAS internal
initiatives designed to strengthen support for student success and the
advisement community. Responsibilities may vary significantly based on
organizational needs and, beyond traditional advising, may range from front
desk coverage and student-facing customer service to proactive outreach
efforts, including cold-calling students, appointment campaigns, data
management, and other advising support functions.

This role provides the opportunity to develop a broad and
diverse skill set through exposure to a wide range of projects,
responsibilities, and operational functions, while helping ensure offices
remain relevant, responsive, and integral to supporting student success and
the work of those who support it.

This is a fixed-term position, with a term end date 2
years from date of hire. This position will have a full-time schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Successful candidates should possess a strong
desire to support college students in achieving their educational goals.
They will need well-developed oral and written communication skills, as well
as strong analytical skills. Experience collaborating and interacting with
diverse constituents and the ability to adapt to a fluid placement based on
center needs are critical to be successful in this position.

The individuals selected for this position will:

  • Train
to become generalists in both academic and integrated advising. While
training, they will provide feedback and support to improve the training
experience for all advising and success personnel.
  • Perform,
on an as-needed basis, the duties of academic advisors or student
success specialists for units across campus.
  • Support
the needs of the advisement community during specific/peak times of the
    semester and targeted events.
  • Provide
direct support to OAS and center staff for projects and initiatives
focused on community engagement, transparent and continuous
    communication.

See the Position Description for additional information.
