Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Head Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of the UCSB Women's Rowing program, including athlete development, training design, competition preparation, recruitment, equipment management, and program operations. The position works collaboratively with the Men's Head Coach, novice coaches, student leadership, alumni, and UCSB Recreation to sustain a competitive, student-led rowing program. The Head Coach provides leadership by developing athletes, coordinating recruiting efforts, maintaining rowing equipment and facilities, supporting fundraising initiatives, and ensuring compliance with University and Sport Club policies. The role requires strong technical coaching, operational management, and shared responsibility for the long-term sustainability of the rowing program.

Required Qualifications:

• 4-6 years Minimum 4+ years of rowing coaching experience.
• Strong leadership and communication skills
• Knowledge of ACRA/WIRA competition structure.
• Experience managing large inventories of specialized equipment.
• Knowledge of University financial, purchasing, reimbursement, and travel procedures.
• Ability to mentor and develop student-athletes.
• Certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience preferred.
• Maintains CPR / AED and First Aid certification.
• Certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience preferred. Required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in related field and/or equivalent experience.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

25% Program Leadership, Coaching & Athlete Development:

Provide overall leadership for all aspects of the Women's Rowing Program. Plan, organize, and conduct team practices throughout the academic year. Develop annual training plans, race strategies, and individualized athlete development plans. Evaluate athlete performance and provide technical instruction and performance feedback. Develop offseason and summer training programs. Mentor student-athletes in leadership, accountability, sportsmanship, academic success, and personal development. Establish program expectations, culture, and competitive standards. Supervise and evaluate novice coaches to ensure consistency throughout the rowing program. Conduct regular coaching staff meetings and coordinate instructional philosophy across all coaches.

20% Program Administration & Operations:

Serve as the primary operational manager for the Women's Rowing Program. Develop and maintain the annual operating calendar for practices, competitions, recruitment, fundraising, and equipment maintenance. Coordinate with Recreation staff regarding scheduling, compliance, travel, facilities, and operational needs. Maintain all required program records and operational documentation. Coordinate regatta registrations and season schedules. Ensure compliance with UCSB, Department of Recreation, Sport Club, USRowing, WIRA, and ACRA policies and regulations. Maintain coach certifications, participant documentation, and required program records. Assist in preparing annual program assessments, reports, and strategic planning documents. Coordinate onboarding and orientation of new coaching staff.

15% Financial Administration, Travel & Compliance:

Serve as the primary administrator for all team travel documentation. Collect, review, organize, and upload all receipts, invoices, and supporting documentation for purchases, travel, and reimbursements. Prepare complete reimbursement packets in accordance with University policy. Coordinate directly with Recreation Business Services to resolve purchasing and reimbursement issues. Monitor travel expenditures and documentation to ensure compliance with University financial policies. Maintain organized financial records supporting program purchases and reimbursements. Coordinate travel logistics, lodging, transportation, and competition registrations. Assist student officers in long-term budget planning and operational forecasting.

20% Equipment, Fleet & Facility Management:

Serve as the program's equipment manager for all rowing assets. Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for boats, launches, trailers, ergometers, docks, and support equipment. Conduct comprehensive annual inspections of every shell, trailer, launch, ergometer, and inventoried asset. Maintain detailed maintenance records and equipment histories. Maintain complete inventories of boats, engines, trailers, oars, electronics, maintenance equipment, and replacement parts. Coordinate repairs with vendors and service providers. Develop annual replacement recommendations and capital equipment plans. Ensure compliance with USRowing safety recommendations and manufacturer maintenance schedules. Collaborate with the Men's Head Coach to equitably distribute launch maintenance, trailer management, and shared equipment responsibilities unless otherwise agreed upon by both coaches. Collaborate with the Men's Head Coach to develop and implement a shared transportation plan for boats and trailers used for competitions and maintenance.

10% Recruitment, Alumni Relations & Development:

Develop and implement annual recruiting strategies. Maintain communication with prospective student-athletes throughout the recruitment process. Coordinate recruitment of incoming freshmen and transfer students. Develop and maintain recruiting databases and communication plans. Coordinate summer onboarding of incoming athletes. Maintain relationships with alumni and donors. Support fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship, and alumni engagement initiatives. Represent the rowing program at recruitment events, community outreach activities, and University functions.

10% Risk Management, Safety & Summer Operations:

Serve as the program's primary safety coordinator. Develop and implement annual emergency action plans. Conduct routine safety inspections of launches, docks, trailers, and rowing facilities. Ensure boating safety equipment is inspected, maintained, and operational. Monitor weather, water conditions, and environmental hazards. Coordinate incident reporting and implement corrective actions following safety incidents. Develop and distribute offseason training plans. Maintain regular communication with current athletes throughout the summer. Support summer recruiting, fundraising, equipment maintenance, and operational planning. Conduct regular inspections of the Lake Cachuma boathouse, docks, launches, trailers, and equipment during the offseason.
