Description
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Responsible for general ledger accounting, financial reporting, fixed asset accounting, and project accounting for assigned railroad entities. The position prepares and reviews journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statements, capital project activity, and fixed asset records; analyzes trends, costs, revenues, commitments, and obligations by road; and communicates results to management. The Senior GL Accountant is expected to identify process and control improvements, support cross-functional projects, and contribute to the annual financial audit. Primary Responsibilities: Prepare, calculate, review, and post monthly journal entries in the accounting system. Maintain accurate accounting records for assigned railroad entities in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies. Serve as the primary GL accounting contact for assigned roads, including recurring close activities, entity-level analysis, intercompany activity, accruals, allocations, and balance sheet account ownership. Coordinate month-end close activities with accounting managers, Accounts Payable, Revenue, Engineering, Procurement, and other cross-functional partners. Review the general ledger monthly; prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations; and research, identify, and correct unusual or inaccurate entries. Review month-end financial results and clearly communicate significant variances, trends, and accounting matters to management. Support fixed asset accounting, including asset additions, transfers, retirements, disposals, depreciation, and periodic review of construction-in-progress balances. Review capital expenditure activity and supporting documentation to evaluate appropriate project and asset classification, coding, useful lives, in-service dates, and capitalization in accordance with company policy and GAAP. Partner with Engineering, Operations, Procurement, and Accounts Payable to monitor project costs, commitments, status, and completion; resolve coding or classification issues; and support timely project closeout and capitalization. Perform other job-related duties as directed. Qualifications:
Prior fixed asset, capital project, or construction-in-progress accounting experience preferred. Ability to analyze project costs and supporting documentation and apply capitalization policies consistently. Experience with SAP fixed asset and project functionality preferred.
