Job Summary

A postdoctoral position is available in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the NIH-funded laboratory of Dr. Farouc Jaffer. The postdoc's focus; investigation of atherosclerosis inflammation using small and large animal models using novel molecular imaging approaches spanning intravascular microscopy to catheter-based intravascular imaging.

A highly motivated, collaborative, critically thinking candidate is sought for a research fellowship that will investigate atherosclerosis in small and large animal disease models, utilizing intravital microscopy, cell biology, molecular pharmacology and physiology to understand the role of in vivo inflammation in atheroma disease progression and complication. Experience in atherosclerosis biology, surgical models, molecular biology (histopathology, RNA, cell culture), microscopy, and flow cytometry is desirable. We are seeking candidates with a PhD, MD/PhD, or MD with prior laboratory experience in biomedicine.

Our interdisciplinary laboratory performs translational research, bridging the gap between understanding in vivo mechanisms of atheroma inflammation and the clinical goal of imaging coronary artery disease inflammation in patients for the first time in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. We focus on developing novel molecular imaging approaches to visualize high-risk plaques, vascular inflammation, and blood clots, including investigating blood flow restoration and therapeutic strategies to improve deep vein thrombosis resolution and prevent thrombotic syndrome. Another major focus is the use of intravital microscopy and intravascular imaging to study atherosclerosis and develop novel molecular imaging approaches.

Recent trainees have published manuscripts in high-impact journals, presented at national and international conferences, won competitive fellowship awards, and have discovered new insights into how atheroma inflammation can be modulated by translational pharmacotherapeutic and coronary interventional devices. Recent trainees have attained faculty posts at prestigious academic institutions in the US, Korea, Japan, UK, Australia, and China, as well as senior scientist positions in the biotechnology and pharma industry.

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • PhD., M.D., PhD. or equivalent
  • Research experience in Atherosclerosis, Vascular Biology, Microscopy, Molecular Biology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with mouse or large animal surgical models, intravital imaging, cell culture, cell and molecular biology, and flow cytometry, is highly desirable
  • Excellent organizational skills, working independently and as a team member, collaboratively

EXPERIENCE:

  • PhD completion, or 2+ years of experience in a research-related field required at a postdoctoral level

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work will be performed in the Simches and Edwards Research Building on the Massachusetts General Hospital main campus, in Boston, MA.

The salary for this position ranges from $73,544 to $81,199.
