The Milken Institute School of Public Health (
SPH), part of The George Washington University (GW), is seeking an Assistant Director of Advising to provide leadership, strategic oversight, and direct student support across schoolwide academic advising functions.
The role provides leadership, strategic oversight, cross-training, and direct management support for academic advising needs across all
GWSPH schoolwide programs, including undergraduate, residential, and online master's and doctoral schoolwide programs.
A key responsibility will be to manage workloads efficiently, cross-train across various programs to ensure comprehensive support, and tailor academic advising and support services according to the academic needs and program enrollments.
Reporting directly to the Assistant Dean of Student Services, this position serves as a strategic liaison to the schoolwide deans and program directors, as appropriate, to improve schoolwide advising resources and student support. The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC.
Leadership and Supervisory
- Provide overall leadership and management for GWSPH undergraduate and schoolwide advising teams, including:
- Weekly workflow oversight, on-campus scheduling, and coverage planning and continuity of coverage across all programs.
- Balancing and distributing advising workloads and responsibilities across assigned programs.
- Supervise and support advising staff, including:
- Approving PTO requests (in coordination with program directors and deans as appropriate).
- Training, organizing, and assigning roles and responsibilities in collaboration with relevant program directors and deans.
- Providing input to support advisor review and performance processes.
- Assisting in troubleshooting complex issues
- Conduct advisor review, performance, and development processes.
- Identify and coordinate professional development opportunities for the schoolwide advising team. This includes industry best practices and GW opportunities.
Advising and Student Support
- Oversee and manage undergraduate academic advising across all programs, deliver direct student advising, and lead the academic standing review process in coordination with undergraduate program directors and the undergraduate dean.
- Act as the primary advisor to all dual degree students and be responsible for managing dual degree program needs and programming and collaborating with undergraduate Program Directors, graduate departments, the SPH admissions team, and the undergraduate dean as necessary to support dual degree program needs.
- Provide and ensure appropriate levels of academic advising support for undergraduate and @GW students and student support for course and degree planning, petitions, requests for Leaves of Absence, Professional Enhancement, etc.
- Represent the undergraduate advising team in relevant SPH and university meetings.
- Coordinate prospective and incoming student engagement by facilitating admissions events, communications, and first-year registration (e.g., Inside GW, admissions tours, incoming first-year registration) in collaboration with GW Undergraduate Admissions, while participating in and supporting relevant curricular and cocurricular programming (e.g., First Year Experience, Milken Cookies events).
- Track academic requirements, student progress, and reporting, including progress audits as needed.
- Identify and implement (with Career Services) meaningful ways to aid students in career development.
- By partnering with Records, Financial Aid, and other GW constituents, have a focus on retention of all undergraduate and graduate students.
- Oversee student matters that require additional attention and/or follow-up, as well as escalation to the schoolwide program director and/or dean as appropriate.
Program, Operations, and Communications
- Support on- and off-campus learning experiences for students in schoolwide programs in coordination with the schoolwide program operations team and faculty leads, including student registration and logistics coordination, including travel as needed.
- Support schoolwide student engagement initiatives by assisting with program communications and logistics for major events, including orientations, admitted student days, and graduation. For Research Positions, please also include
- Assist with graduation clearance for undergraduate and @GW students.
- Help coordinate with 2U, Inc. (program information technology vendor) for @GW student admissions and post-admissions student affairs.
Policy and Documentation
- Maintain advising-related policies and procedures to ensure alignment with School and University standards, keeping program guides, GW bulletin entries, handbooks/manuals, and website content current.

| Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. |
