GIS Scientist

The GIS Scientist provides environmental compliance and remediation support, geospatial analysis, remote-sensing data development, and technical support to client research staff, cooperators, and partners. This position develops mapping imagery classifications and spatial analysis products in support of ecological monitoring and environmental projects.

The GIS Scientist reports to the CNDS Program Manager and may coordinate daily work with client representatives, including Project Managers and Task Order Managers. This position has no supervisory or management authority and follows CNDS and government direction to complete assigned deliverables.

A government contract requires that this position be restricted to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. You must provide documentation that you are a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident to qualify.

HD Responsibilities Include:

• Support environmental compliance projects through field sampling, visual inspections, hazardous waste and material assessments, and preparation of technical reports and memorandums for government clients.

• Support environmental remediation projects through field sampling, site-condition assessments, and preparation of project reports.

• Develop spatial datasets from remotely sensed data, including satellite imagery, elevation data, and aerial photography.

• Conduct spatial analyses of geospatial datasets to support ecological monitoring, including statistical analysis, data compilation, and identification of spatial patterns.

• Create, maintain, and analyze GIS datasets using mapping and related geospatial tools.

• Process data from multiple sources and integrate it with GIS data to meet project and team requirements.

• Produce maps, figures, tables, and other geospatial deliverables that meet project requirements and applicable data standards.

• Manage assigned project tasks, including cost and schedule tracking, coordination, logistics, and delivery of project products.

• Develop project management plans, sampling and analysis plans, waste management plans, and related project documentation.

• Procure materials and supplies for field investigations and coordinate and schedule field activities.

• Support the preparation of health and safety plans and other project-required documentation.

• Maintain complete and accurate documentation for project activities, datasets, analyses, methodologies, and procedures.

• Record project status, timekeeping, and product information in the project-tracking database in accordance with established procedures.

• Ensure compliance with applicable data standards, policies, regulations, and project requirements.

• Resolve technical issues related to GIS data, analysis, mapping, and project deliverables.

• Participate in CNDS, client, and project meetings as needed.

HD Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Environmental Science, or a related field with an emphasis in GIS or remote sensing.

• Five to seven years of experience working in research, environmental, geospatial, or related technical setting.

• Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) clients.

• Experience supporting U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Districts or Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Regions.

• A master's degree may substitute for a portion of the required experience.

• Working knowledge of field sampling and visual inspection practices.

• Working knowledge of environmental compliance and remediation activities.

• Ability to prepare technical plans, reports, memorandums, figures, and tables.

• Ability to process, manage, and integrate data from multiple sources into GIS datasets.

• Ability to perform GIS analysis and map production using GIS and related tools.

• Knowledge of data management practices and applicable data standards, policies, and regulations.

• Ability to document technical and procedural methodologies for dataset creation, maintenance, and analysis.

• Strong oral and written English-language communication skills.

• Ability to manage assigned tasks, meet schedules, and maintain accurate project documentation and timekeeping.

• Willingness and ability to travel to project locations and attend client meetings.

• Ability to work effectively in an office environment and collaborate with CNDS personnel, government clients, and project partners.

• Mut pass pre-employment requirements of Cherokee Federal.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Remote Sensing, or a related discipline.

• Experience supporting environmental compliance, environmental remediation, or ecological monitoring projects.

• Experience developing geospatial products from satellite imagery, aerial photography, and elevation data.

• Experience conducting spatial statistics, spatial pattern analysis, and geospatial data compilation for environmental or ecological applications.

• Experience developing project management plans, sampling and analysis plans, waste management plans, and health and safety documentation.
