| Primary Purpose of Position |
The Assistant Director of Student Health Services assists in managing the daily operations of Student Health Services (
SHS), supporting the delivery of clinical care, health education and programming, and supporting SHS's public health functions. The Assistant Director supports the coordination of overall departmental operations and provides advanced clinical oversight and direct patient care, ensuring services align with best practice standards, ethical guidelines, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements. The Assistant Director fosters a welcoming, student-centered, and supportive environment while demonstrating leadership and excellence in operational management, health and wellness programming, staff development, and public health initiatives. |
| Job Description |
Job Duties & Responsibilities
A) Operations Management (40%)
- Ensures daily clinical operations align with established UNC Pembroke and the UNC system policies & procedures
- Oversees daily operations of Student Health Services
- Supervises non-clinical and clinical staff in absence of Director
- Participates in evaluation of departmental operations with a focus on departmental efficiency, health & wellness programming, staff development, & public health functions
- Participates in departmental strategic planning and strategic growth
- Serves on university committees with an employee and student health wellness, & safety focus
- Acts as a liaison to faculty, staff, students, and parents on clinical health matters
- Assist the Director with the development of policies and procedures in adherence to accreditation standards, policies, and local, state, and federal regulations and licensing requirements
B) Health & Wellness Programming (20%)
- Develops, maintains and implements evidence-based programs that promote student's health and wellness knowledge, skills, & behaviors
- Supports nurse educator in program delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement based on student's needs assessment
- Identifies needs and coordinates the delivery of primary, secondary & tertiary health promotion prevention programs.
- Seeks opportunities to collaborate with campus and community partners to execute health and wellness programming
C) Staff Development (20%)
- Assists Director in promoting a culture of continuous learning, professional accountability, patient safety, and excellence in nursing practice.
- Participates in recruitment, onboarding, and retention of non-clinical & clinical staff
- Assess staff education and professional development needs based on clinical practice, organizational priorities, and regulatory requirements
- Develop & delivers in-service training, quarterly tabletop exercise, and competency-based education for Student Health Services staff
- Coordinate annual clinical competencies, skills assessments, and required nursing education
- Maintain educational records, competency documentation (CPR), certifications (professional nursing licensure), and HIPPA/Title IX/ACES/DOIT training requirements
- Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs through competency assessments, staff feedback, and quality indicators
D) Public Health (20%)
- Participates in campus public health assessments to identify student health needs and emerging health concerns
- Oversees daily Health History Form completion, Immunization compliance, and Student Health Insurance program enrollment/waiver process to promote early completion & reduce barriers to completion
- Serves as public health coordinator in coordination with director:
- Performs disease surveillance
- Participates in outbreak investigations
- Engages in emergency preparedness activities
- Provides university stakeholders guidance regarding communicable disease testing & treatment
- Maintains and builds upon professional relationships with local & state public health agencies
Student Health Services staff are mandatory employees and, as such, are required to report to work during states of emergency. Additionally, this position requires some evening and weekend hours to support Student Health Services and university programming.
