SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR


The Washington County Information Technology Department, located in West Bend, has an excellent opportunity as a full-time on-site Systems Administrator. Under the general direction of the IT Infrastructure Manager of the Information Technology Department, provides technical support and problem resolution to users on the County's computer system. The System Administrator provides frontline technical assistance to county employees, elected officials, and participating municipalities to ensure uninterrupted access to technology resources. This role responds to service requests related to desktops, laptops, mobile devices, printers, applications, and basic network connectivity, escalating issues as needed. System administrators assist with account setup, password management, software installations, and end-user training while following county security policies and service standards. The position also documents incidents, tracks assets, and supports countywide technology initiatives to maintain efficient and responsive government services.

A Systems Administrator in this role supports several local government agencies throughout Washington County, Wisconsin, ensuring reliable technology services that help various departments operate efficiently. The position is part of a collaborative IT team responsible for maintaining critical systems, addressing technical issues, and delivering responsive support. Travel within Washington County is a regular expectation, allowing the administrator to provide on site assistance as needed. Additionally, participation in an on call rotation is required to ensure timely response to urgent technical needs and maintain continuity of county-wide operations.



Training and Experience:

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license and pass a security background check.
  • Experience with installing business applications and resolving software conflicts due to versioning or incompatibility.
  • Experience with replacing failing hardware components (network card, memory, motherboard) in PC's, laptops and servers.
  • Experience with Microsoft DHCP, DNS, IPv4, firewall basics, and networking.
  • Experience with wireless networking and security.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible work experience in technology/systems support.

  • Post high school education from a recognized technical school, college or university in computer science, management information systems, or a related area may be substituted for part of the work experience requirements as follows:
  • Associate's Degree and (3) years of work experience
  • Bachelor's Degree and (2) years of work experience
  • Master's Degree and (1) year of work experience.



Preferred technology skills/Certifications:

  • Office 365 Administration
  • Microsoft MCP or greater
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)

Duties/Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.




  • Provides superior customer service while providing technical support to County employees concerning computer software products.
  • Triage, route and responds to incoming client needs through e-mails, calls and requests for technical support.
  • Remotely troubleshoots and resolves incidents using tools such as Remote Desktop Connection and workstation mirroring software.
  • Coordinates with Technical Support Centers to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Assists with the creation, maintenance and management of client process documentation.
  • Analyzes solutions for equipment, software and various automation needs including installation, configuration or repair.
  • Provides on-site computer and software application training. Prepares training materials for various software applications. Develops and coordinates computer training classes for Departmental personnel.
  • Installs, sets-up, and delivers components of the voice/data network.
  • Responsible for tracking and monitoring open problems to ensure service level standards are met.
  • Support other government agencies within Washington County on tier 1 and 2 support issues.
  • Participate in after hours on-call rotation.



Work Direction Received: Works under the general direction of the IT Infrastructure Manager.

Decision Making: Decisions are made independently concerning analyzing and resolving software or hardware problems.

Interaction: Interaction with other County employees, municipal employees, vendors, and software and hardware support engineers and occasionally with the public.

Essential Knowledge and Abilities:

Demonstrated expertise in the following areas:




  • Microsoft Active Directory
  • Windows File Sharing services, DNS, DHCP, and other Window Services
  • Windows Desktops: Windows 11
  • Apple Devices (iPad, iPhone)
  • Mobile Device Management
  • Office 365 Administration
  • Security concepts including antivirus software, patching, and policies/procedures
  • Phone system support
  • Ability to analyze and implement solutions in a fast-paced environment as well as document project planning.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact effectively with various employees.
  • Able to fulfill physical demands of job, sensory demands (seeing and hearing), and cognitive demands (concentration, conceptualization, memorization).
