Senior Project Manager - Slayden

Slayden Constructors Inc. (SCI), a wholly owned subsidiary of MWH Constructors, Inc., is seeking experienced Senior Project Managers throughout the Portland, Oregon Metropolitan area to lead the successful delivery of complex water and wastewater treatment infrastructure projects for municipal and industrial clients.

This is a senior-level project leadership position responsible for the overall performance of major projects, including safety, client relationships, financial results, schedule, procurement, risk management, and project team development. The Senior Project Manager will lead multidisciplinary project teams, mentor Project Managers and Project Engineers, and serve as a primary point of contact for clients, design partners, subcontractors, and other key stakeholders.

Essential Functions

• Provide overall leadership and accountability for the planning, execution, financial performance, and successful delivery of large and complex water and wastewater construction projects.
• Lead Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers, Project Engineers, Field Engineers, Superintendents, and other project personnel, establishing clear expectations and driving accountability across the project team.
• Plan, organize, and staff key project positions in coordination with Operations leadership and other department leaders.
• Establish project objectives, execution strategies, policies, procedures, and performance standards consistent with company requirements and contractual obligations.
• Serve as a senior-level liaison with owners, clients, architects/engineers, design partners, subcontractors, and other key stakeholders throughout preconstruction and construction.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships while identifying opportunities to expand existing relationships and support future work.
• Provide leadership during preconstruction, including constructability reviews, estimating, scheduling, procurement planning, risk identification, value engineering, and development of project execution strategies.
• Oversee construction activities through Project Managers, Construction Managers, and Superintendents to ensure projects meet safety, quality, schedule, cost, and contractual objectives.
• Proactively identify project risks and potentially serious situations, develop mitigation strategies, and lead corrective actions when necessary.
• Maintain executive-level oversight of project schedules, including major milestones, procurement activities, critical-path items, recovery strategies, and overall project delivery.
• Assume overall responsibility for project financial performance, including budgets, cost controls, revenue recognition, forecasting, cash flow, change management, contingency management, and profitability.
• Lead contract administration and commercial management efforts, including owner contracts, subcontracts, purchase agreements, change orders, claims, and dispute resolution.
• Oversee procurement strategies for major subcontractors, equipment, materials, and long-lead items.
• Review project forecasts and financial performance regularly, identifying trends and implementing corrective measures to protect company and project objectives.
• Represent Slayden in owner meetings, executive project reviews, partnering sessions, labor strategy discussions, and other high-level project meetings.
• Work collaboratively with project leadership to develop and execute the company's Management Administration Plan and other required project planning documents before field activities begin.
• Ensure project teams consistently follow company safety policies, quality standards, project controls, and established operating procedures.
• Champion a strong safety culture and ensure work is planned and executed in a manner that protects employees, subcontractors, clients, and the public.
• Provide leadership, mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to Project Managers, Project Engineers, Field Engineers, and other developing leaders.
• Participate in recruiting, team development, succession planning, and performance management for project personnel.
• Support business development and preconstruction efforts, including client presentations, project pursuits, proposal development, interviews, and strategic planning as needed.
• Collaborate with regional and executive leadership on project performance, resource planning, operational strategy, and organizational initiatives.
• Assume additional leadership responsibilities as directed by the Regional Director.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field; equivalent combination of construction experience, training, and education may be considered.
• Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive construction management experience, preferably within heavy civil, water/wastewater, industrial, or complex infrastructure construction.
• Minimum of 5 years of direct experience delivering water or wastewater treatment plant projects, or comparable complex process/industrial infrastructure.
• Demonstrated experience successfully leading large, complex construction projects and multidisciplinary project teams.
• Proven experience managing projects through multiple phases, including preconstruction, procurement, construction, commissioning/startup, and closeout.
• Strong understanding of water/wastewater construction, including concrete structures, process mechanical systems, piping, equipment, civil/site work, utilities, and associated MEP systems.
• Demonstrated responsibility for project financial performance, including cost forecasting, revenue forecasting, change management, procurement, contract administration, and profitability.
• Experience managing Project Managers, Project Engineers, Superintendents, and other project personnel.
• Strong understanding of construction contracts, project controls, scheduling, cost management, risk management, and subcontractor management.
• Ability to identify project risks, develop solutions, and make sound business decisions on complex construction projects.
• Proven ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with owners, design partners, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
• Strong business acumen with demonstrated judgment, leadership, negotiation, and decision-making capabilities.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with field personnel, clients, design teams, and executive leadership.
• Ability to apply innovative and effective management techniques to maximize team and project performance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive experience with municipal water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, pipelines, reservoirs, and/or advanced water treatment facilities.
• Experience managing projects valued at $50M+ and/or multiple concurrent complex projects.
• Experience with alternative project delivery methods, including CM/GC, CMAR, Progressive Design-Build, and Design-Build.
• Experience leading self-perform heavy civil construction operations.
• Strong knowledge of Primavera P6 or comparable CPM scheduling platforms and construction project management systems.
• Experience with project pursuit, preconstruction, estimating, and client development activities.
• OSHA training and demonstrated commitment to proactive safety leadership.
• Professional Engineer (PE), DBIA, CCM, PMP, or other relevant professional certification is a plus.
