Job Summary

Barrett Paving Materials Inc. is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Estimator to join our team. This role is ideal for individuals looking to begin or grow their career in the construction and paving industry. The Estimator will assist with preparing cost estimates, reviewing project specifications, gathering subcontractor and supplier pricing, and supporting bid submissions for asphalt paving, site development, and heavy civil construction projects.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior estimators, project managers, and operations personnel to develop accurate and competitive project estimates while gaining valuable industry experience.

Main Responsibilities
  • Assist in reviewing plans, specifications, and bid documents for upcoming projects.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for asphalt paving, aggregates, site work, and related construction activities.
  • Solicit and evaluate quotes from subcontractors, vendors, and material suppliers.
  • Support the preparation of project cost estimates, budgets, and bid proposals.
  • Assist in developing labor, equipment, and material pricing.
  • Maintain accurate estimating records and project bid files.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits when required.
  • Collaborate with project managers and operational teams to understand project requirements and production capabilities.
  • Track bid opportunities and submission deadlines.
  • Assist with turnover meetings for awarded projects.
  • Develop an understanding of local market conditions, construction methods, and material pricing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required

  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally to project sites.

Preferred

  • Internship, co-op, or previous construction industry experience.
  • Familiarity with construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Experience with estimating software (HCSS HeavyBid, B2W, AGTEK, Bid2Win, or similar).
  • Knowledge of asphalt paving, aggregates, or heavy highway construction.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods.
