The Light Industrial Maintenance (Light IM) team is seeking a highly motivated individual to lead and support product development initiatives. The Staff Chemist will develop and commercialize new products and execute strategies within interior and exterior spaces. This position will be tasked with leading high-level projects and working with various stakeholders to drive business results.

Job duties include contact with other employees and access to confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company's staff, employees, and business relationships.

This role is not remote/hybrid. This role will report to Sherwin-Williams Morikis Global Technology Center located at 6745 Miller Road, Brecksville, OH 44141.

20% Travel


  • Selection and evaluation of raw materials, formulation development, paint manufacturing, and performance testing to meet product specifications and customer requirements.
  • Development, optimization, and commercialization of Light IM coating technologies
  • Investigation and resolution of formulation, manufacturing, quality, and field performance issues through root cause analysis.
  • Frequent interaction with Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, Technical Service, and suppliers.
  • Leading project teams consisting of Chemists, Technicians, Manufacturing personnel, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Designing and executing experiments using sound scientific principles and statistical tools.
  • Accurate documentation, interpretation, and presentation of technical data and project results.
  • Identifying continuous improvement opportunities related to safety, quality, productivity, cost reduction, and product performance.
  • Supporting customer visits, supplier interactions, plant trials, scale-up activities, and field evaluations.
  • Mentoring and developing Chemists and Technicians through technical coaching and knowledge sharing
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math ("STEM") field
  • Minimum of 7 years of lab experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of formulation or processing related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry
  • Experience in solving complex problems and develops the solution of problems, formulation, development, process, maintenance, and equipment issues
  • Experience in planning, execution, analysis, and documentation in a laboratory setting
  • Design for Six Sigma certification
  • Design of Experiments and Statistical Analysis
  • Ability to be able to differentiate among colors
  • Design of Experiments, Minitab, Business Objects, DFSS, 6-Sigma Certification
