Posting Summary	The Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences is seeking two temporary Remote Field Technicians - Oceanographic Antarctic Research to provide field and research support for the Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research ( LTER) program during the 2026-2027 Antarctic research season. The positions involve extended deployment to remote field locations in Antarctica and support oceanographic field sampling, laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, sample processing, and research activities associated with the Palmer LTER program. Anticipated Deployment Periods: Vacancy 1: October 19, 2026-February 5, 2027 Vacancy 2: December 28, 2026-May 7, 2027 Position Responsibilities: The Remote Field Technicians will assist with the collection of data and samples for the Palmer LTER program. Responsibilities include the setup, calibration, operation, and maintenance of laboratory and oceanographic equipment, including the C- OPS optical profiler, IFCB, CTD, and miniFIRe fluorometer. Additional responsibilities include conducting oceanographic field sampling; processing and analyzing collected samples; performing chlorophyll filtration and primary production experiments; and assisting with other research activities associated with the Palmer LTER program. The positions require extended deployment in Antarctica and work in remote field environments. Research activities and schedules may vary based on field conditions, vessel operations, weather, sampling requirements, and project needs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience	Requires demonstrated experience with oceanographic field or laboratory research, including the collection and processing of environmental samples and the operation of scientific equipment. Relevant education, training, and/or research experience appropriate to the position is required.
Certifications/Licenses	Must possess or be able to obtain a valid U.S. passport or other appropriate travel documentation prior to deployment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities	Requires knowledge of oceanographic field and/or laboratory research methods and the ability to collect, process, and maintain scientific samples and data. Must be able to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot scientific and oceanographic equipment; follow established research protocols; maintain accurate records; and work effectively both independently and as part of a research team. Requires strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing field conditions and schedules during extended deployment in a remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications	Previous experience with oceanographic field research, environmental sampling, and laboratory procedures is preferred. Experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting oceanographic instrumentation, including CTD systems, optical profilers, fluorometers, or similar scientific equipment, is desirable. Experience with chlorophyll filtration, primary production experiments, or other marine science sampling techniques is also preferred. Previous experience working in remote field environments, aboard research vessels, or as part of an interdisciplinary research team is beneficial.

Physical Demands and Work Environment	Must be able to meet the following requirements: Work a six-day work week, with extended hours as necessary on field days. Work aboard small boats in variable conditions, including wind, ocean swell, and cold temperatures of approximately 20-30F. Work and live in a remote, communal environment with approximately 40 people for up to six months. Work at a remote Antarctic field site accessible by an approximately four-day ship transit departing from Chile. Successfully complete and pass required Physical Qualification (PQ) medical and dental examinations prior to deployment. Possess a valid, unexpired passport and maintain appropriate travel documentation for the duration of the deployment. Perform field and laboratory activities involving the operation and handling of oceanographic and scientific equipment.
