Position Summary

UNM Athletics Academic Advising is seeking a Student Eligibility Specialist to coordinate and advise specific sports which may include women's basketball, men's and women's track and field/cross country, and men's tennis. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and knowledge of NCAA rules and standards in regard to student eligibility and graduation.

Leadership opportunities may exist with this position commensurate with experience.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide comprehensive academic support to an assigned caseload of student-athletes
  • Develop individualized academic plans that support progress toward degree, academic eligibility, and graduation
  • Monitor academic progress including regular meetings with assigned students to assess academic performance, address concerns, provide resources, and support established goals
  • Assist student-athletes with course selection, registration, schedule planning, and major exploration
  • Collaborating with Academic Advisors to provide academic guidance
  • Implementing programs and initiatives with defined recruitment, retention, and graduation outcomes
  • Monitor student-athlete academic progress to support NCAA, Mountain West Conference, and UNM eligibility requirements
  • Assist student athletes in understanding eligibility requirements
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records regarding student-athlete eligibility and academic progress

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

* Master's degree in Counseling, Education, Sports Management, or a related field

* Demonstrated experience with:

o Advising collegiate student-athletes

o Knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules and certification processes

o Coordinating and overseeing programming aimed to support incoming students of various levels of academic ability

o Employing a wide variety of methods designed to meet individual risk levels and learning preferences

o Supporting high-achieving students with academic needs as well as career focused pursuits

o Taking initiative, self-motivation and professionalism

o Thriving in a collaborative team environment

o Coordinating workshops and/or events pertaining to student-athletes' holistic development
