Job Summary
The Class A Truck Driver will operate an automatic tractor with a 48-foot trailer to deliver waterworks supplies, including fire hydrants, pipes, valves, and fittings, to construction and job sites. Most deliveries are local, with two days each week involving full-day round-trip deliveries to coastal locations. The driver will coordinate with contractors at delivery sites, who are generally responsible for unloading materials, while occasionally assisting with loading using a sit-down forklift. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, DOT compliance, accurate documentation, and professional customer service.
Job Responsibilities
- Operate a Class A tractor-trailer with an automatic transmission and 48-foot trailer.
- Transport and deliver waterworks materials to construction and job sites according to scheduled delivery times.
- Coordinate with customers and site contractors using provided delivery addresses and contact information.
- Assist with loading materials using a sit-down forklift when required.
- Assist with unloading materials as necessary.
- Ensure all materials are properly secured and within applicable weight limits.
- Verify delivery materials against tickets and customer orders.
- Obtain and verify customer signatures on delivery tickets.
- Pick up customer returns and verify that returned products match the applicable credit request.
- Pick up local customer purchase orders as assigned.
- Secure and return packing lists and delivery documentation.
- Verify that all materials have been unloaded and properly placed at the delivery site.
- Communicate with the supervisor throughout the workday regarding deliveries, issues, and completion status.
- Review completed deliveries with the supervisor for accuracy and completeness.
- Return all required delivery ticket copies and verify that documentation is complete.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Comply with all Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and applicable safety regulations.
- Fuel the vehicle as needed.
- Report vehicle defects, accidents, moving violations, and other safety or operational issues to the supervisor.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service at all times.
- Assist with warehouse activities as needed.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures, company policies, and operational requirements.
- Work overtime as needed.
Job Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of experience operating the class of commercial vehicle assigned.
- Minimum 1 year of experience holding a CDL.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Required state-issued self-certification designation of non-excepted interstate status.
- Minimum age of 21.
- Experience operating manual-transmission trucks.
- Ability to operate a sit-down forklift; training may be provided.
- Ability to safely secure and transport materials within applicable weight limits.
- Ability to perform required pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Ability to understand and follow DOT regulations and safety procedures.
- Ability to accurately complete delivery documentation and obtain customer signatures.
- Professional communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with supervisors and customers.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
- Ability to perform occasional warehouse duties when required.
