Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Development, the Senior Director of Development (Sr. DoD) serves as a key member of UCLA Anderson's development team and directly supervises professional staff responsible for implementing and administering assigned fundraising programs. Leading the school's Major Giving team, the Sr. DoD designs and develops fundraising objectives and, through subordinate professional staff, implements and evaluates activities supporting established unit goals. The position selects, trains, directs, evaluates and motivates staff; coordinates work assignments and project priorities; and ensures accountability for assigned operational, financial and human resources. In partnership with the Executive Director of Development and the Senior Associate Dean of External Affairs, the Sr. DoD develops and executes short- and long-term fundraising strategies within established priorities to support the school's vision and strategic plan. The position participates in strategic planning, administers approved budget allocations and guides the preparation of fundraising materials, proposals and presentations. Applying full knowledge of the assigned fundraising area, the Sr. DoD interprets established policies and exercises judgment within defined procedures to resolve operational issues and recommend program improvements. Working collaboratively with colleagues across UCLA Anderson, UCLA External Affair and campus-wide as well as other internal/external constituents, the Sr. DoD coordinates fundraising efforts and supports staff in achieving established goals. With an emphasis on major gifts of $250,000 or more and endowment gifts of $350,000 or more, the position builds and maintains an assigned portfolio of donors and prospect and engages regularly with donors and volunteers to strengthen the school's major giving pipeline. In addition, to establishing overall fundraising priorities for the Major Giving team, the Sr. DoD also oversees budget allocations, and serves as a delegated authority of the Executive Director and Senior Associate Dean as appropriate. This individual determines staff assignments and implementation methods within those parameters, consulting with the Executive Director on policy exceptions, additional resource needs and changes in program scope. In addition, the Sr. DoD serves as an advisor to the unit and administration on matters within the assigned area.


Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of experience as a professional development officer in a higher education setting. Those with experience working in similarly complex organizations in a related field such as s (Required)

  • Minimum of five years of experience and progressive responsibility as a professional development officer in a higher education setting. Those with experience working in similarly complex organizations in a related field such as sales, marketing or business development may be considered. (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience in soliciting major gifts and/or prior experience with solicitations of a similar nature, level and complexity. (Required)
  • Appropriate management and supervisory experience and/or ability to hire, train, oversee and evaluate staff; strong ability to steadily guide progress and meet team objectives. (Required)
  • Strong aptitude for leadership with ability to mentor, coach and develop staff members to help them reach their goals. (Required)
  • Ability to set clear performance goals and hold staff accountable while working collectively to build a positive, collaborative and high performing team culture. (Required)
  • Ability to travel and work some evenings and/or weekends as needed. (Required)

  • Advanced knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure, as they relate to fundraising and the assigned program is preferred. (Preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge of fundraising, donor relations and public relations principles, concepts, procedures and techniques, including prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies. (Required)
  • Solid knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations and policies governing assigned fundraising activities. (Required)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of management concepts, principles and applicable personnel policies. (Required)
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills and political acumen to establish and maintain effective working relationships across organizational levels and with external constituencies. (Required)
  • Ability to meet predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts, through effective program and project planning, organization, execution and evaluation. (Required)
  • Demonstrated project management, critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills to implement and execute programs and achieve established goals within budget and time constraints. (Required)
  • Solid ability to analyze and evaluate programs and services and implement appropriate improvements. (Required)
  • Demonstrated skill in making persuasive and compelling presentations of program goals and objectives. (Required)
  • Experience conceptualizing, planning and implementing special events. (Required)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with team members, colleagues and other internal/external constituents toward the accomplishment of fundraising goals; resourceful with ability to recognize opportunities. (Required)
  • Appropriate management and administrative skills needed to organize, direct, motivate and evaluate other professionals and volunteers; supervisory skills to oversee and evaluate the efforts of staff. (Required)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite of applications is required as is familiarity with other applications, programs and databases as needed with a willingness to learn new technologies. (Required)
