Opportunity Summary

The Lead Steam Generating Plant Inspector (SGPI) serves as Team Lead for the Amphibious Steam (LHD/LHA) visit team and as the program's senior inspection specialist for steam generating propulsion plants installed in LHD-1 Wasp class and LHA-6 America class (non-hybrid configuration) ships. The Lead SGPI carries inspector-level authority and credibility across steam turbine main propulsion, steam turbine generators, boiler systems, and associated control and auxiliary systems. This position requires particular familiarity with the hybrid propulsion implications for LHA-6 class ships that include gas turbine capability, and with the impact of hybrid visits on Gas Turbine team concurrency per PWS Section 1.2.

Primary Responsibilities


  • Lead the Amphibious Steam (LHD/LHA) visit team through all phases of RATT visit execution.
  • Serve as the senior SME for steam turbine propulsion, steam generators, steam turbine generators, and associated control and auxiliary systems.
  • Coordinate with the Lead MGTI and PM when LHA-6 hybrid propulsion visits require gas turbine SME support, per PWS Section 1.2 concurrency rules.
  • Compile the Pre-Visit Intelligence Package for each assigned hull; conduct pre-visit contact with ship leadership.
  • Conduct and supervise deckplate training at all levels; administer Level 2 pre/post knowledge assessments and complete Level 3 behavioral observation forms.
  • Generate maintenance-ready AWRs for all Category I and II material discrepancies; review all SME-generated AWRs.
  • Complete all post-trip deliverables within five working days of trip completion.
  • Submit inputs for the monthly Class Issues Assessment Report; flag amphibious steam class-level patterns to the PM.
  • Participate in annual STANCO; lead steam propulsion curriculum review agenda items.


Security Clearance Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Active U.S. DoD security clearance (Security clearance eligibility may be considered on a case-by-case basis.)


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of supervisory experience in analyses, information system operations, and technical project implementation; twenty-five (25) or more years highly desirable.
  • Minimum fifteen (15) years of supervisory-level watchstanding experience on warships or military auxiliaries as EOOW, Propulsion Plant Watch Officer, Chief Engineer, or equivalent responsible for overall propulsion plant operations and associated control and auxiliary systems.
  • Extensive Navy technical management experience on multiple ships.
  • Extensive experience as EOOW on multiple steam ships.
  • Minimum two (2) tours as a Navy Steam Generating Propulsion Inspector with Navy surface ship maintenance processes.
  • Extensive experience conducting steam generating propulsion inspections on surface warships or military auxiliaries with qualifications and certification as or equivalent to a U.S. Navy Steam Generating Propulsion Inspector.
  • Direct operational and maintenance experience within the last five (5) years with steam turbine main propulsion, steam turbine generators, associated control systems, and associated auxiliaries currently in use by the Navy.
  • Undergraduate or associate's degree, or extensive demonstrated experience in a management role.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Twenty-five (25) or more years of SGPI-qualified inspection experience.
  • Experience on LHD-1 class and LHA-6 class (both steam and hybrid configurations).
  • Cross-qualification awareness of LM-2500 gas turbine systems for LHA-6 hybrid propulsion coordination.
  • Prior RATT, ERAT, or TYCOM-directed fleet engagement experience.


Physical Expectations

  • Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, and standing; frequent periods of prolonged sitting may be required.
  • Maneuvering around tight spaces in a confined environment.
  • Ability to speak, read, hear, and write, with or without assistance.
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment.
