Position Summary

KLJ is seeking an enthusiastic and curious Archaeology Intern to join our Cultural Resources team. This internship provides hands-on experience supporting archaeological surveys, field investigations, data collection, artifact processing, research, and technical documentation for a variety of infrastructure, energy, transportation, and environmental projects.

As an Archaeology Intern, you'll work alongside experienced archaeologists and cultural resource professionals, gaining practical field and office experience while learning how archaeology supports responsible project development and historic preservation. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in cultural resource management, archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, or environmental sciences.

What You'll Do

Under the guidance of experienced archaeologists, you will:



  • Assist with archaeological field surveys, site investigations, and cultural resource projects.
  • Support the collection, identification, recording, and organization of artifacts and archaeological data.
  • Help document field observations using GPS equipment, maps, photographs, and digital data collection tools.
  • Conduct background research related to archaeological sites, historic properties, and cultural resources.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, field notes, and project documentation.
  • Learn and follow applicable cultural resource laws, regulations, and preservation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and quality standards throughout project activities.
  • Participate in safety training and adhere to all KLJ safety policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with project teams across multiple disciplines.
  • Perform additional project-related duties as assigned.


What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications



  • Currently pursuing a degree in:


    • Archaeology
    • Anthropology
    • Historic Preservation
    • Native American Studies
    • Cultural Resource Management
    • Or a related field


  • Strong interest in archaeology, cultural resources, and historic preservation.
  • Ability to learn field and laboratory methods used in archaeological investigations.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Coursework in archaeology, cultural resource management, GIS, history, or related disciplines.
  • Familiarity with GPS equipment, mapping software, or data collection applications.
  • Previous field school participation or archaeological field experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and technical writing.

  • Walk long distances across uneven terrain.
  • Stand, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb.
  • Lift and carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds frequently and greater weights occasionally with assistance.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Travel to project locations as needed.


Hours and Travel



  • Full-time or part-time internship opportunities may be available.
  • Seasonal field schedules may require flexible work hours.
  • Travel and overnight stays may occasionally be necessary depending on project assignments.
