About the Job

The temporary Research Professional 1 position will be responsible for assisting with ongoing research projects and lab experiments in Dr. Barney's lab related to plastic biodegradation and plant microbiome integration. This is a 100% time, temporary Civil Service position, located in person. The anticipated end date of June 30, 2027.

Please note, this position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship. This position does not offer a STEM OPT training program.

Major Areas of Accountability

  • (70%) Conduct experiments: Independently conduct molecular and genetic experiments in various laboratory bacteria, lipid analysis of various biological samples, standard molecular biological manipulations, recording and analyzing data.
  • (20%) Design routine experiments outlined by the PI, on both a day-to-day and long-term basis.
  • (5%) Archive all experiments performed in the course of the study, as well as the generated reagents in accordance to lab convention. All strains, DNA constructs and reagents are to be maintained, with a full record of the work.
  • (5%) Routine laboratory maintenance. Assist in maintaining a ready supply of strains, solutions, chemicals, and various lab reagents to ensure efficient functioning of the lab.
Qualifications

Required

  • B.S. in microbiology, biochemistry, biological engineering or related area; or a combination of related education and/or work experience related to the job totaling at least four (4) years
  • Experience reporting on the progress and direction of individual projects.
  • Experience with planning and conducting experiments and data collection.
  • Experience maintaining documentation and reports for data and procedures obtained from separate projects in an organized and logical manner.

Preferred

  • Experience working with bacteria in a research setting.
  • Understanding of basic and advanced genetic manipulation techniques, including transfer of DNA into bacteria for genomic incorporation.
  • Ability to isolate and purify various enzymes, perform standard enzymatic reaction, extract and quantify various lipid compounds
  • Experience reporting on the progress and direction of individual projects using written and verbal English, to include proper grammar usage and accurate spelling.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $26.58 - $28.50 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
