Position Description
| Primary Purpose and Essential Functions |
The Department of Mathematics at the University of the Pacific invites applications for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor position in statistics, beginning Fall 2027. We seek a statistician or applied mathematician who is committed to excellence in undergraduate education and who has demonstrated experience successfully working with diverse student populations. We welcome applicants working in statistics, biostatistics, statistical computing, statistical learning, data science, applied mathematics, or related areas.
Priority will be given to candidates whose research interests provide opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with Pacific's professional schools, such as the Dugoni School of Dentistry, the Long School of Pharmacy, the School of Health Sciences, and the recently announced School of Medicine (to start 2030), as well as with departments in the College of the Pacific, such as Biology. Candidates should be interested in developing collaborative research and grant activities and in involving undergraduate students in research, internships, and other experiential learning opportunities.
The position carries a teaching load of five courses per academic year (typically a 3/2 semester load). In addition to teaching, Pacific faculty are expected to maintain an active research program. Faculty in the Department of Mathematics also have opportunities to participate in teaching first-year Core Seminars in the University's General Education Program.
The Department of Mathematics consists of eight full-time tenure-line faculty and five full- or part-time adjunct faculty who provide coursework in mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics for mathematics and applied mathematics majors, as well as for students across the university. The department offers a collegial and collaborative environment with opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and research across Pacific's undergraduate programs and professional schools.
The University of the Pacific is a comprehensive, student-centered private university with its main campus located in Stockton, California. The Department of Mathematics is part of the College of the Pacific, which offers programs in the humanities, fine arts, and natural and social sciences. The Stockton campus also includes the Schools of Pharmacy, Engineering & Computer Science, and Business, as well as Benerd College and the Conservatory of Music. Pacific's Dugoni School of Dentistry is located in San Francisco, while its School of Health Sciences and McGeorge School of Law are located in Sacramento.
With a strong emphasis on undergraduate education and close faculty-student collaboration, Pacific provides faculty with opportunities to mentor students through research, internships, and other experiential learning.
