The Usability Engineering Intern will support the investigation, evaluation, and evolution of a next-generation user interface for a targeted portfolio of Keysight products.

This role will focus on understanding user workflows, identifying usability opportunities, and validating design concepts through research and testing.

The intern will collaborate with engineering, product management, and UX professionals to help ensure the interface delivers an intuitive, efficient, and consistent user experience.

In addition to evaluating the new UI direction, the intern may assess design systems, prototyping platforms, and usability testing toolsets that can support ongoing annual refreshes of the user experience while maintaining consistency, quality, and development efficiency.

This position offers hands-on experience in user-centered design, usability engineering, and UX strategy within a technically sophisticated product environment.


Responsibilities

Potential Activities

  • Conduct user research to understand target user needs, workflows, pain points, and expectations.
  • Evaluate proposed UI concepts against established usability and human factors principles.
  • Assist in planning and executing usability studies, interviews, surveys, and prototype evaluations.
  • Analyze research findings and present recommendations to project stakeholders.
  • Create wireframes, mockups, workflows, and prototype concepts to communicate design ideas.
  • Benchmark competitor and industry solutions to identify best practices and emerging trends.
  • Investigate design systems, component libraries, prototyping platforms, and UX toolsets that can improve scalability and support annual UI updates.
  • Help define reusable interaction patterns, usability guidelines, and design standards for the target product family.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to incorporate usability feedback into design and development decisions.

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience Design, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in usability, user-centered design, and user research methodologies.
  • Familiarity with UX design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to analyze user feedback and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.
Preferred
  • Experience conducting usability studies, interviews, surveys, or observational research.
  • Familiarity with human factors principles, UX design systems, accessibility guidelines, or interaction design.
  • Experience creating wireframes, mockups, or interactive prototypes.
  • Understanding of software development processes and web-based user interfaces.
  • Interest in scalable design systems, component libraries, AI-assisted design tools, and continuous UX improvement practices.
  • Experience presenting research findings to technical and non-technical audiences

The level of role will be based on suitable experience, education and skills; most offers will be between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range listed below.

CA Pay range: Min $41.14 to Max $44.31
