THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on maintaining and repairing vehicles and heavy equipment used in daily transportation operations. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Vehicle Repair: Repair cars, trucks, and heavy equipment, including replacing parts and performing mechanical overhauls
  • Maintenance Work: Complete preventative maintenance tasks such as diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, and system adjustments
  • State Inspections: Conduct official safety and emissions inspections, perform required repairs, and complete inspection paperwork
  • Equipment Diagnostics: Use diagnostic tools to identify problems and determine repair methods, tools, and parts
  • Safety Practices: Maintain a safe work area, follow all protective procedures, and report injuries or hazards
  • Field Adjustments: Make routine adjustments, perform minor repairs, and demonstrate repair techniques to other staff

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) program; or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • Employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
