Position Description The Manager of Income Taxes oversees the execution of income tax functions for UNS Energy and its affiliates, including compliance, financial reporting, planning support, and risk management, in alignment with financial and regulatory requirements. The Manager applies technical expertise in federal, state, and local tax laws to support the development and execution of tax strategy. This role evaluates and assesses the tax implications of business activities and provides guidance on transactions, financial reporting, and regulatory matters. The Manager maintains the tax risk and control framework, including execution of SOX controls, documentation of uncertain tax positions, and adherence to established governance processes. The role also monitors legislative and regulatory developments and supports responses to regulatory inquiries and filings. This position leads the preparation and review of key components of the income tax provision (ASC 740), tax returns, forecasts, and related financial disclosures, and manages tax audits and inquiries. The Manager serves as a primary contact for external auditors, consultants, and taxing authorities. The Manager drives continuous improvement in tax processes, systems, and data to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. This role provides day-to-day direction, coaching, and development of tax team members, promoting accountability, technical rigor, and consistent application of tax policies across affiliated entities. Position-Related Responsibilities * Support the development and execution of tax strategy, including effective tax rate management, cash tax optimization, and analysis of federal and state tax planning initiatives (e.g., intercompany transactions and financing structures). * Partner cross-functionally (e.g., Financial Planning and Analysis, Legal, Rates, Treasury, operations) and provide tax input to support business decisions, strategic initiatives, and forecasting. * Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, assess impacts, and support compliance efforts, including tax-related components of regulatory filings and rate proceedings. * Supports automation and technology initiatives to modernize tax processes and improve data accessibility. * Provide income tax support across affiliated entities, ensuring consistent application of tax positions and alignment with corporate governance standards and applicable policies. * Interpret and apply complex tax laws and regulations, providing guidance on transactions, financial reporting, and regulatory matters. * Manage the preparation and review of tax compliance and reporting processes, ensuring accurate and timely filings, provision, and financial reporting requirements. * Maintains the tax risk and control framework, including SOX controls and uncertain tax positions, and ensures adherence to established tax policies and standards. * Coordinate audit readiness activities, serving as a key point of contact with external auditors and advisors and supporting the timely resolution of audit matters. * Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, data quality, controls, and overall effectiveness of income tax processes. * Provides day-to-day direction, supervision, and development of tax staff, ensuring high-quality execution, accountability, and alignment with established tax practices. Management Responsibilities * Ensure that the Company's management principles, policies and programs are consistently practiced and continually support the Affirmative Action Plan. * Assume fiduciary responsibility for operating the business and provide recommendations on cost improvement measures. * Ensure that the Performance Management program is administered uniformly and effectively. * Comply with and administer the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement when applicable. * Administers personnel functions, including recruiting, review and approval of job descriptions and salary classifications, and selection and placement of personnel. Participates in hiring, termination, promoting, assignment and direction of staff. Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and standards, company policies, practices and ethical obligations to investigate, evaluate and recommend appropriate resolution to employee complaints. * Promotes and participates in the professional development, personal growth and career planning of staff. Motivate, recognize and reward, coach, counsel, train; provide feedback to employees during performance reviews. Participates in Leadership Development programs. * Addresses disciplinary and/or performance issues, according to company policy, and communicates effectively with employees regarding corrective action. Has input into the adjustment of grievances and administration of discipline. * Develops departmental business plans, plans day-to-day operations, estimates personnel needs, and schedules and assigns work. Responsible for developing an effective team of accounting professionals. Evaluates the structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group. * Responsible for promoting a safe work environment and ensuring the company is in compliance with employee safety rules and regulations. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.) Minimum Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 24 accounting credits from an accredited institution * 8+ years of directly related experience. * Extensive knowledge of income tax law and accounting, including relevant regulations and technical guidance * Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and retain high-performing teams, including coaching and succession planning * Proven ability to foster an inclusive, high-performance culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement * Knowledge of internal control frameworks and their application to financial reporting and compliance * Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives and deadlines * Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external stakeholders * Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information to diverse audiences, including senior leadership * Demonstrates integrity, accountability, and sound judgment while fostering an environment that values diverse perspectives * Promotes continuous improvement and scalable processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Preferred Qualifications * Big 4 accounting firm background and gas/electric utility experience strongly preferred. * CPA license Prior experience working in the electric utility industry is desirable; however, high-caliber professionals with experience in complex businesses who possess the agility to transition to new industries will also be considered. | |
