Position description

The Earth Section within the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence within the faculty, staff and student body, and invites applications from qualified individuals for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientist for an open search. The Earth Section consists of the Geosciences Research Division and the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics.

The Earth Section within the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego is conducting an open search for Project Scientist positions (non-tenured, Assistant, Associate or Full level). UC San Diego is seeking experienced scientists in geochemistry, geophysics, geodesy or a related field to carry out both independent and collaborative research projects. Examples of research projects include but are not limited to: sediment core analysis, radiocarbon and OSL sediment dating, numerical modeling of earthquake processes, seismic structural imaging, and natural hazards mitigation using seismogeodesy.

Under supervision of the Principal Investigators, the Project Scientists will function independently, and the role includes:

1) designing, managing and conducting experiments and research;

2) supporting their Principle Investigator with the preparation and submission of proposals to funding agencies;

3) leading and making innovative and significant contributions to lab project(s);

4) participating and presenting at scientific meetings;

5) writing scientific reports and manuscripts for submission to top-tier peer-reviewed journals.

At UC San Diego, Project Scientists are academic researchers who are expected to make significant and creative contributions to a research team, but are not necessarily leaders of the research team. They are not required to carry out independent research or develop an independent research reputation, but will publish and carry out research or creative programs with supervision by a member of the Professor or Professional Research series. University and public service are encouraged but not required, and they do not have formal teaching responsibilities.

Appointments and duration vary depending on the length of the research project and availability of funding. Appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientist level will be based on the candidate's background and experience.

Review of applications will continue until the position is filled based on the on-going needs of Earth Section.
