Position Summary
The UNM School of Medicine's Department of Undergraduate Medical Education is seeking a Research Specialist for a dual-appointment position in the Program Evaluation, Education and Research (PEAR) unit (0.8 FTE) and the Academic Media Services (AMS) unit (0.2 FTE). The PEAR team is responsible for evaluating the medical school curriculum, tracking students' academic performance, and tracking the practice location of graduates working as physicians in New Mexico. The AMS team supports the integration of technology in medical school courses, tracks course objectives, and supports the technology needs of UME faculty, staff, and students.
Responsibilities for this Position
PEAR Responsibilities
Managing and administering evaluations to medical students about their experiences in the medical school curriculum. The person in this position will primarily administer evaluations for courses in the first two years (i.e., preclinical curriculum) of medical school as well as a series of research evaluations. Managing these evaluations includes attending pre-block planning meetings and working with the course director to update and/or change evaluation items as necessary.
Managing the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) process in which student volunteers (5-6 per course; different students for each course) meet with a course director to provide formative feedback during the course. After the course ends, the CQI students write a brief report documenting formative feedback, resulting changes, and any additional summative feedback. CQI responsibilities include recruiting student volunteers, training them, and reviewing draft reports for clarity and professionalism.
Coordinating Curriculum Committee course evaluation processes by collecting, cleaning, and compiling evaluation data for each course review and participating as a member of one or more evaluation teams. The Research Specialist will analyze data, summarize key findings, and draft reports in collaboration with other team members. Presentations to committees may be required.
Assisting in collecting information for the annual Location Report, which tracks School of Medicine graduates working as physicians in New Mexico. The report provides a snapshot of the numbers, percentages, and geographical distribution of graduates practicing medicine in the state.
Holding a purchasing card and processing unit purchases and travel reimbursements.
Serving as the unit's primary point of contact with external units and/or departments for day-to-day administrative tasks, including answering the main phone line and managing the unit email account.
Providing administrative support for focus groups and other special projects associated with faculty and/or student research.
AMS Responsibilities
Assisting in collecting information for the MD Program curricular objectives mapping and entry. The Research Specialist will work closely with the AMS supervisor and teaching faculty to ensure that all curricular objectives are vetted and entered into the Curriculum Management System.

The Person Selected for this Position Will
Attend meetings for the planning of courses; explain standard evaluation practices (e.g., end-of-course evaluations, CQI process) to course directors and follow up on questions and concerns.
Correspond with faculty regarding the content, administration, and reporting of end-of-course evaluations.
Create and administer end-of-course evaluations, track response rates, send reminders, and extend due dates as necessary.
Run reports, review their content, and distribute reports to course directors, administrators, and other stakeholders.
Manage, administer, and report on research surveys.
Manage CQI processes for individual preclinical courses by recruiting student volunteers, training them on expectations and deliverables, reviewing draft reports, and distributing final reports.
Coordinate and participate in evaluation teams for Curriculum Committee course reviews. Duties include gathering data, distributing materials, analyzing findings, identifying key themes, and preparing written reports and presentations.
Assist in data analysis for special projects such as focus groups and research projects.
Assist in researching the locations of graduates practicing medicine in New Mexico and maintain tracking lists using Microsoft Excel and/or Access.
Process reimbursements and purchasing orders via purchasing card as requested and approved by unit leadership.
Answer and/or forward inquiries received through the main phone line and email account.
Schedule and manage meetings with staff, medical students, and faculty as necessary.
Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
Complete miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
- For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and demonstrated proofreading abilities.
- Experience managing projects and meeting multiple deadlines.
- Self-motivated and resourceful learner who does not require constant oversight.
Experience with UNM financial procedures, including LoboMart and Chrome River, or similar purchasing programs.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word (e.g., inserting page numbers, tables, and images) and Excel (e.g., sorting and filtering data, using functions, creating and formatting charts).
Familiarity with Microsoft PowerPoint, including entering and formatting text, charts, and images.
Familiarity with relational databases and entering, linking, and querying data. Some experience with Microsoft Access (opening and manipulating tables and queries) is preferred but not required.
Experience scheduling and coordinating training and/or focus group events.
