The salary range for this position is $300,000-$475,000. This position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan. The department chair role will include the following additional incentives: a $7,500 annual stipend.

Position description

Reporting to the Dean, UC Davis SOM, the Chair has responsibility for all faculty, learners, and staff in the department. They will be a visionary leader, with a successful record of achievement in academic research in biomedical disciplines encompassing cell biology or other related fields. Exceptional accomplishments as an academician are also critical as the Chair's duties will include continuing their own research program as well as supervising and maintaining academic activities. The predominant criteria for appointment as Chair include a national reputation for research and the proven ability to mentor faculty while training future leaders in biomedical science. Prior extensive administrative experience as a department chair, vice chair, or director of graduate studies or equivalent is preferred.

The Chair of the Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy, University of California, Davis School of Medicine provides leadership in strategic vision and collaborative implementation to ensure the future growth of the department. Additional duties and faculty rank will be influenced by candidate qualifications and interests, and departmental needs as applicable. The successful candidate will be comfortable operating in a highly matrixed environment to be an effective leader in the School of Medicine and across UC Davis.

The following represent essential functions and responsibilities for the Chair of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy:



  • Promotes professional development among existing faculty members and attracts highly motivated and exceptional faculty, trainees, staff, and students across the diversity spectrum to the department. Ensures the department is recruiting top faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals.
  • Promotes a culture that results in an increase in extramural research funding and publications.
  • Builds and maintains a well-balanced department in education, service, and research.
  • Promotes the continued integration of innovative cell biology and human anatomy education and training in undergraduate and graduate medical education. Ensures excellence in teaching of graduate and medical students.
  • Advances and leads continuous process improvement initiatives to further the department's capabilities.
  • Establishes trust, alignment and collaborative working relationships with staff and administration in the pursuit of maximally productive inter-disciplinary and inter-professional partnerships.
  • Coaches, mentors, and develops others to build internal capabilities and the talent that facilitates succession. Develops the next generation of academic and scientific leadership in the department.
  • Ensures the application of best practices, incorporating regulatory requirements at the local, state, and national level; utilizes benchmarking and data analysis.
  • Maintains and develops professional knowledge and personal competence through publications and professional organizations.
  • Represents the department on an institutional and national level.


In addition, Academic Senate faculty member expectation and responsibilities include:



  • Teaches medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Conducts bench/clinical/translational research leading to peer-reviewed publication.
  • Success in obtaining extramural funding, as applicable to faculty series.
  • University and professional service.
  • Further expectations are determined by faculty series.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • PhD, MD or MD/PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in a related area, including but not limited to Cell Biology and/or Human Anatomy. For MD applicants, additional requirements include board-certification and fellowship training as applicable to specialty, and subspecialty if trained.
  • Candidates must possess academic credentials that qualify for appointment as an Associate or Full professor at UC Davis School of Medicine. This is a Senate faculty position.
  • A national reputation of successful research and research leadership - for example, through leading an interdisciplinary research program, division or department, knowledge of national research trends, and a significant record of peer-reviewed scientific publications and success in securing extramural research funding.
  • Progressive and broad administrative experience within an academic or similarly complex institution.
  • Demonstrated prior success at leading interprofessional teams, working across campus units.
  • Ability to lead at both the strategic, tactical, and administrative levels, including experience managing space and financial resources.
  • Demonstrated leadership in diversity and inclusive excellence efforts.
  • Demonstrated teaching ability and commitment to university and public service.
  • A strong history of written and verbal communication with a track record of working in a matrix organization, and interpersonal skills that demonstrate the capacity to work collaboratively and effectively with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire colleagues and staff to achieve excellent results.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

  • A strong visionary and inspirational leader who can artfully convey a long-term vision for the department and play a pivotal role in shaping that vision as an integral part of the basic science departments. This individual will be equally skilled at implementing a detailed plan to achieve that vision and will bring a forward-thinking perspective that drives innovation and excellence in research and education.
  • Highly approachable and compassionate; a record of promoting a culture of innovation, collaboration, teamwork, respect, and honesty; a professional and personal demeanor characterized by integrity, graciousness, humility, genuineness, empathy, and sincerity; and a passion for the organization's mission and objectives.
  • Exceptionally team-oriented; skilled at working well and partnering with scientists across the college and University to identify, build, and negotiate "win-win" relationships and collaborations; politically astute yet apolitical with an ability to break down silos and ensure a collegial and productive work environment.
  • Highly adept and at ease managing the day-to-day operational details with the ability to make strong and decisive decisions when needed while at the same time creating unity within a diverse department.
  • Able to conceptualize and analyze complex business opportunities and to understand the finances of an academic department and apply that knowledge to appropriately manage all aspects of the department.
  • Demonstrated ability to actively develop the department's mission, strategies, and practices to support a diverse and inclusive workplace.
