Position Detail:

We are looking for an experienced Instrumentation & Controls Electrician to join our Operations team in our Adrian, Cowansville and Homer City, PA locations.

Reporting to the CT Hydro Maintenance Manager, the Instrumentation & Controls Electrician (I&CE) is responsible for supporting the hardware, software and networks at FirstLight's operating sites. Will perform operations and maintenance and assist with developing and maintaining safe and reliable data systems.

Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:



  • Participate in the daily maintenance of the Allegheny 8 and 9 hydroelectric plants;
  • Support the development of the hardware, software, and networks for all related computing systems;
  • Perform operations and maintenance activities;
  • Develop a thorough understanding of generating station principles of operation as required to successfully assist with designing and maintaining safe and reliable automation and data collection systems working within station schedules and budgets to meet station management goals;
  • Maintain existing facility computer systems (hardware, software, network, and security implementation) and help to develop new systems to accommodate changes in methodologies, procedures, and regulatory requirements;
  • Engage with vendors to support system upgrades and troubleshooting;
  • Identify and suggest revisions to existing programs, systems, and procedures to correct deficiencies, and conduct appropriate software and/or hardware tests after revisions to ensure the correct operation of revised systems;
  • Prepare and review technical specifications and initiate budgetary proposals for acquiring additional or replacement hardware and/or software for real-time and monitoring systems, as well as personal computers and local area network equipment;
  • Participate in the on-call schedule for off hours and weekend coverage;
  • Work with contractors on high voltage systems and equipment requiring maintenance and repairs;
  • Work with electrical equipment such as motors, motor controllers, switches, lighting, and electrical sources including 120 & 480volts and DC circuits and equipment;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned;
  • Complies with all FirstLight policies and procedures.


Job Qualifications / Skills


  • AS degree with focus in Engineering, Computer Science or similar;
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial environment (power plants, papermills or equivalent);
  • Knowledge of Power System Control or Instrumentation and Control systems;
  • Experience with the design, implementation, and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems in a production environment;
  • Experience using PLC software and hardware, operating systems, applications, computer networking and various programming languages such as: PLC Ladder Logic, Visual Basic, Wonderware suite of products (Intouch, Historian, Plant Information Systems (PI)); AutoCAD suite of products (LT, Electrical, Vault, Raster Design);
  • Proven self-starter with strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills who can work independently with little direction;
  • Demonstrated skills in the areas of planning, organizing, and project management including coordinating vendor support;
  • Working knowledge of basic electrical wiring techniques, cable terminations and test equipment including SMART (HART) instrumentation;
  • Ability to quickly respond to changes in generation station operating requirements with appropriate system hardware, software equipment modifications;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong commitment toward adherence to high standards and best work practices;
  • Must be available to work overtime or on short notice as required.

Physical Requirements



  • Capable of frequently standing; walking; balancing; sitting; climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks, stacks, etc); stooping; squatting; crouching; bending; crawling; kneeling; grasping; reaching; pushing; pulling; feeling; talking and hearing as well as the ability to sit for extended periods;
  • Must be physically capable of performing demanding work at various heights and in adverse conditions during operations, shutdowns, and in fire/emergency activities;
  • Must be physically capable of wearing protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses, etc;
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
