POSITION OVERVIEW:

Blood Bank Supervisor provides direction, oversight and guidance for the activities of testing related to the Blood Bank Department within the Great Falls Clinic Hospital laboratory. Under minimal direct supervision, the Blood Bank Supervisor performs, coordinates and controls the daily technical functions necessary for the efficient functioning of the department. This includes writing and reviewing departmental procedures, monitoring daily quality control, training of staff technologists, instrument functionality, temperature monitoring, assigning and entering proficiency testing, evaluation and implementation of new instrumentation and procedures as set forth by the laboratory and accrediting agencies. This position requires the ability to analyze data and accurately formulate effective approaches to resolve problems on an ongoing basis. The Blood Bank Supervisor will act as a resource person to laboratory technologists and providers, in lieu of a staff Clinical Pathologist, to aid in areas of Clinical Hematology when unusual results are obtained. The Blood Bank Supervisor will also rotate through all departments within the laboratory and remain proficient in those departments. Gives direction to Medical Technologist, Medical Lab Technician (MLT), Laboratory Assistant, and Phlebotomists. Receives direction from Laboratory Manager; Assistant Manager.

EDUCATION:

BA/BS Degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or related field along with successful completion of Clinical internship (NAACLS accredited or equivalent)

EXPERIENCE:

Five years' experience as a registered technologist in an accredited laboratory.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:



  • MT (ASCP) or other nationally recognized registry
  • Current Montana State CLS Certification


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:



  • Advanced knowledge of Transfusion Services department laboratory procedures and operations including automated and manual methodologies.
  • Advanced knowledge regarding use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical significance of patient Hematology results.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agency requirements.
  • Knowledge of safety and infection control regulations and policies.
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to organize workload to obtain quality results with optimum productivity while rotating through all departments.
  • Ability to delegate appropriate tasks and work assignments appropriate staff members.
  • Ability to evaluate patient and control results for trendes, shifts and other significant changes and take proactive measures to assure quality laboratory testing.
  • Ability to analyze data quickly and accurately and to formulate effective approaches to resolve problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other technical and non-technical staff members, physicians, nursing staff, and entities outside of the Great Falls Clinic in oral and written formats.
  • Ability to evaluate performance of those technologists assigned to department with concurrence of the laboratory manager or assistant manager, make recommendations for performance improvements and implement these changes.
