General Notes

The Child Psychiatry Access Network (CPAN) and the Perinatal Psychiatry Access Network (PeriPAN) are an interdisciplinary clinical services program intended to offer primary care clinic providers and OBGYNs prompt access to on-call psychiatrists to provide expertise in assessment, treatment, and referrals for pediatric and/or perinatal patients identified as having a mental health challenge. The Provider Behavioral Health Consultant will work under the supervision of the program's Medical Director in collaboration with the Behavioral Health Consultant Manager. The candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with providers, ability to work independently with an attention to detail and effective oral and written communication skills, and an ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with external stakeholders.

This is a federally funded position sponsored by the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC). TCMHCC was created by the 86th Texas Legislature to leverage the expertise and capacity of the health-related institutions of higher education to address urgent mental health challenges and improve the mental health care system in this state in relation to children, adolescents, and perinatal women.

This position has an end date of 8/31/2025, may be renewable based upon availability of funding, work performance, and progress toward goals.

Purpose

The Provider Behavioral Health Consultant will provide consultation services to providers, such as pediatricians, family medicine physicians, OB/GYN physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and/or midwives needing assistance with patient behavioral health concerns, psychiatric consultation, behavioral management plans, or resources with the goal of increasing access to mental health services for mothers, children and adolescents. The Provider Behavioral Health Consultant will work efficiently to help providers manage mental health concerns and facilitate referrals.

Responsibilities
  • Manages and evaluates primary care provider requests in the areas of: assessment, diagnosis, behavioral management, and referral assistance according to program protocol. Communicates requests to program psychiatrists within prescribed timeline and provides psychoeducation, referral information, and resources upon request.

  • Collaborates with primary care clinicians, psychiatrists, and program coordinators to assist with coordination of consults and referrals for children, adolescents, and mothers with mental health needs.

  • Follows standard criteria to track project progress and status to ensure they are in line with program objectives.Participates in any supervision, feedback, and quality assurance checks. Maintains records and performs data entry as required by protocol.

  • Conducts outreach to educate providers and community agencies about CPAN and PeriPAN. Enrolls providers in CPAN and PeriPAN programs to provide services to better assist their patients in need of mental health care.

  • Efficiently and accurately prepares updated resource guides and handouts related to Texas Child Mental Health programs. Contributes to and uses the state platform for community health referrals.

  • Performs all other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

LPC, LCSW, or LMSW. Master's degree and at least three (3) years of professional work experience. Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others with an attention to detail, effective oral and written communication skills, and an ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with external stakeholders.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in health systems caring for patients with behavioral or mental health challenges. Experience working with PCPs, OB/GYN physicians, and/or family practitioners. Experience working across programs, departments, and/or institutions to achieve goals.

Salary Range

$62,000+ depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
