Position Summary

The Cook Utility is a front-line staff member. Under the direction of the Kitchen Manager and the Director of Operations, the Cook/Utility person is responsible for the preparation and serving of daily meals, and maintaining proper documentation of food preparation and service. Other responsibilities as Utility person include keeping kitchen equipment clean, dishes, pots, pans and dining room tables clean.

Essential Functions

1. The Cook Utility person is responsible for preparing and serving all meals in accordance to funding guidelines.

2. He/She is responsible for keeping all kitchen equipment clean.

3. Cook utility person will maintain documentation to be compliance with all funding agencies.

4. Cook Utility person will keep procurement of all kitchen supplies.

5. He/She is responsible for sweeping the dining room and kitchen and mopping each as necessary.

6. The Cook Utility person will perform other duties as assigned or as necessary to carry out the work of his/her position.

7. The Cook Utility setting limits and boundaries for all residents as set forth in the program guidelines to provide a safe, supportive environment.

8. Acts accordance with all health, safety and emergency policies and procedures.

9. Attend staff meetings, conferences and trainings as requested.

10. All other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as supplies, stocking of kitchen supplies, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Because the Kitchen is open 7 days a week you may be asked on a short notice to change shifts in order to provide full coverage. Holidays are worked according to set weekly/daily shifts schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High School Diploma, equivalency GED degree.

2. Hold and maintain a valid California Drivers license.

3. The ability to work independently yet function as part of a team is important.

4. Occupationally capable of performing assigned task and meet the demands of the kitchen.

5. Food Handlers certificate will be asked to complete certification within 1 week of employment.

6. At least one-year experience in related field.

7. Demonstrated organizational skills and an ability to work with a minimum of supervision.

8. Must demonstrate maturity in judgment and good crisis intervention skills.

9. Must be amenable to the mission statement of The Salvation army, and function accordingly.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

1. Ability to carry out assignments independently and good time management skills.

2. Good communication skills both oral and written.

3. Ability to communicate effectively with Supervisor, co-workers and clients, both oral and written. Set reasonable limits; react swiftly and intelligently in emergency situations.

4. The successful candidate will have previous experience as a Cook/Utility assistant or other related training.

5. Ability to maintain a non-judgmental attitude in working with clients.

6. Must be a self-starter and initiate task/supervision with little direction.

7. Driving test and clean MVR check.

8. Passing a criminal check, including fingerprinting.

9. Working in vicinity of children a criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
