Position Summary

The Schneeweiss Adult Congenital Heart Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks to add another Nurse Practitioner to our program. This is an exciting opportunity to improve the lives of individuals with congenital heart disease together with a dedicated, family-oriented team of providers, while working at one of the premier Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Centers in the United States.

Our Program is one of the largest and oldest of its kind, and it continues to grow to accommodate the rapidly increasing number of adults surviving with congenital heart disease. We are ACGME-accredited for ACHD Fellowship training and an Adult Congenital Heart Association Comprehensive ACHD Center. We are a major referral center for high-complexity ACHD patients.

Our team consists of five full-time ACHD physicians and two Nurse Practitioners practicing at Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan in addition to satellite offices in White Plains, NY, Greenvale, Long Island, and Englewood, NJ. We have our own ACHD echocardiography lab with a team of ACHD trained sonographers.

We are proud to provide the highest level of ACHD care and strive to ensure a positive experience for our patients living with congenital heart disease. Our Program is the medical home for our patients, and we seek to add another Nurse Practitioner who shares these views and will maintain our Program's long-standing culture of sensitivity, empathy, and nurturing for our patients.

Under direct supervision of physicians in the HCM program, the Nurse Practitioner will provide diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health care services. The NP will assess patients in the office environment and hospital by history taking, clinical examination and review of pertinent investigations and prior medical records and will document patient care services by charting in patient records. Patient load will consist mostly of patients presenting to the outpatient clinic for initial assessment or follow up of their hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or other cardiac condition.

Responsibilities

  • Under direct supervision of our ACHD physicians, the Nurse Practitioner will diagnose and treat patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Work closely with teams from cardiac surgery, interventional catheterization, electrophysiology, heart failure and mechanical circulatory support, maternal-fetal medicine, hepatology, and neurology.
  • In the outpatient setting, Evaluate the ACHD patient in clinic in conjunction with the attending and formulate the medical plan.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic tests and follow up on these studies.
  • Follow up on x-rays and laboratory data and interpret diagnostic test results.
  • Interface with patients and their families to provide results.
  • Work with the front office to assess the acute medical needs of patients.
  • Participate in congenital heart conferences that include a weekly ACHD morning report, journal club and surgical conference.
  • Coordinate care between different providers and coordinate procedures such as cardiac catheterizations, EP procedures and cardiac surgery.
  • Enhance the expertise and scope of the HCM clinic as it continues to grow.
  • Assist in research as part of the program and perform data gathering, analysis of data and contribute to writing manuscripts.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, with one to two years of experience.

  • Must be eligible for AHA BLS certification.
  • Must be eligible for AHA ACLS certification (Critical Care/Surgical).
  • Eligible for DEA certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • We recognize that most NPs will not have cared for many ACHD patients, and so we anticipate the need for a learning period and ongoing mentoring to build a robust knowledge base, as has been successfully achieved with our two existing nurse practitioners.
  • Prior cardiology (adult or pediatric) experience as a RN or NP is preferred to serve as a foundation upon which ACHD knowledge can be built.
  • We have a strong research program and while not a prerequisite for this position, prior involvement in clinical research would be valuable.
  • Basic computer skills to navigate Electronic Medical Records.
  • Skills with Microsoft Excel, Word, and experience with clinical research preferred.

  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements.
  • Participation in Medical Surveillance Program

    • Contact with patients and/or human research subjects
    • Wear N-95 respirator
