DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Division of Undergraduate Education (UE) is a complex organization comprised of Campus Advising Coordination, Summer Session, Colleges Academic (Cowell, Stevenson, Crown, Merrill, Kresge, Oakes, Porter, Rachel Carson, College Nine, and Lewis), Enrollment Management (Undergraduate Admissions, Orientation Programs, and Financial Aid), Registrar and the Educational Partnership Center (EPC General, EAOP, K-12 Regional Alliances, Research & Evaluation, K-12 STEM, MESA, CAL-SOAP, CRLP, and GEAR-UP). The division has a budget of $30 million and is comprised of more than 800 staff, students, and faculty personnel, each one of whom helps students to be successful.

The Academic Integrity Office (AIO) will reimagine the university's approach to academic ethics, with a focus on student-centered learning, mentorship, and restorative justice. The establishment of the AIO represents an opportunity for a transformational improvement toward the following key goals: (1) Provide student-centered education with an emphasis on ethical behavior and the principles of restorative justice. (2) Improve the student experience with a single point of contact and centralized case management for academic integrity violation reports.
Engage students through peer mentoring opportunities. (3) Reduced workload for faculty and staff. (4) Establish best practices for faculty in promoting academic integrity in the classroom and technologies that proliferate instances of academic misconduct. (5) Build and grow partnerships on campus and systemwide. The Academic Integrity Office provides leadership on strategies and initiatives to support integrity and ethics within the University's teaching and learning profile through integrity-related curricular innovations and partnerships with a wide array of departments and faculty.

JOB SUMMARY

The Education Specialist develops, delivers, and evaluates the effectiveness of AIO curricula and services such as individual mentoring, proactive integrity education, and restorative workshops or classes for students, staff, and other members of the campus community.

Using specialized skills in curriculum design and teaching, learning theories and student academic development, as well as expert knowledge of best practices in academic integrity, the Education Specialist trains and supervises student employees and interns who lead restorative workshops, classes, or proactive education and outreach on behalf of the office.

The Education Specialist facilitates difficult conversations and holds others accountable with empathy, mentoring and modeling these skills for others across campus. The Education Specialist communicates, collaborates with, and provides guidance to campus partners who teach, advise, and coach students, enhancing knowledge of teaching and learning approaches that strengthen academic integrity.

Finally, the Education Specialist oversees development and evaluation of AI Office outreach, which may include: planning events, creating publications and/or web-based content, and training faculty and staff on teaching or counseling techniques that increase self-regulation and motivation, reframing conversations about integrity and supporting students' independent, honest completion of academic coursework.

As needed, the Education Specialist makes referrals and connects students to appropriate resources. This position requires creativity, attention to detail, advanced knowledge of curriculum development and program assessment, plus a desire and demonstrated ability to mentor and supervise the work of others.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $90,000 - $105,000/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Academic integrity education and curriculum development

  • Leads design, delivery, and evaluation of academic integrity training initiatives, including developing curricula, adapting existing curricula, and recommending or implementing process improvements.
  • Conducts outreach throughout the year supporting students to better understand their rights and responsibilities with respect to academic integrity: e.g., orientation (online/in person), Welcome Week, post-responsibility-finding workshops (online/in person), and at the request of specific organizations or groups.
  • Monitors short and long-term effectiveness of AIO education and outreach, employing a variety of data collection approaches, reporting techniques, and modes of stakeholder engagement.
  • Builds staff and faculty members' knowledge and understanding of rights and responsibilities in academic integrity policy and process (e.g., reporting, due process, due diligence in proactively promoting integrity, knowledge of standards of evidence).
  • Delivers and evaluates just-in-time customized training in multiple formats such as classes, workshops, and/or meetings, as requested by academic departments, divisions, other campus partners (such as Learning Support Services, Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Education).

30% - Student supervision and mentoring

  • Hires, trains, and mentors student employees who lead integrity outreach and training. Coordinates regular meetings and office hours for employees, develops and oversees employee-hosted educational initiatives including integrity-themed tabling, study breaks, and more.
  • Hires, trains, and mentors teams of student employees who serve as advocates for peers reported on suspicion of academic integrity breaches. Oversees and evaluates teams of student employees who support peers with reviewing academic integrity policy, preparing documents for inclusion in case files, responding to voluntary disclosure statements (e.g., for graduate school and employment opportunities) as needed.
  • Trains and communicates standards of evidence (preponderance, clear and convincing, beyond a reasonable doubt) to student employees who serve on hearing boards as voting members and/or persons of support. Collects data, evaluates, and reports on the effectiveness of such training.
  • Leads collaboration with campus partners (Ombuds Office, Student Conduct and Conflict Education, or similar) to develop joint training and/or professional development opportunities for student employees and other partners as appropriate.

20% - Academic integrity process and program assessment

  • Proactively meets with students to assess needs, risks, and remedies, exercising professional judgment in making referrals to campus partners. Follows up on regular trainings to disseminate best practices that help students reduce risk and demonstrate due diligence when avoiding accidental integrity violations.
    Using expert knowledge of best practices in academic integrity and learning theory, adapts curriculum design and academic integrity policy and process training to the learning styles, academic acculturation, and language background(s) of relevant individuals and groups.
  • Exercises good judgment, innovation, and professional approaches to curriculum design and development. Acts with a high degree of autonomy in solving problems, making decisions, and managing conflict.
  • Trains and communicates standards of evidence (preponderance, clear and convincing, beyond a reasonable doubt) to staff and faculty who serve on hearing boards as voting members and/or persons of support. Collects data, evaluates, and reports on the effectiveness of such training.

10% - Campus collaboration and outreach

  • Consults and collaborates with members of the campus community to (1) raise awareness of AIO presence and expertise, and (2) increase understanding of academic integrity principles, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in administrative or research policy and program project planning. Recommends and implements actions to address systems issues that arise within academic integrity policy or process.
  • Using expert knowledge of academic integrity policy and process, leads engagement with assigned portfolio of partner offices, assisting AIO Director and/or colleague(s) in strategic planning to support these efforts.
  • May attend meetings with UCSC divisions and departments as invited to represent the Office regarding topics such as ethics, professional integrity, best practices for teaching and learning to support integrity, subject-specific academic integrity concerns, and/or responding to suspected integrity breaches.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Education Policy or related field; and/or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience working in environments that require the ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality required by law (FERPA) and other privacy regulations.
  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience monitoring and assessing people, processes and curricula to identify, implement, and evaluate improvements.
  • Skills and experience developing and administering classes and programs to meet the learning needs of diverse students, encouraging honest completion of coursework and facilitating their academic success.
  • Prior experience hiring, training, or supervising employees and/or student employees.
  • Prior experience implementing academic curricula (such as tutoring and/or serving as TA, grader, reader).
  • Prior experience as an instructor of record, including duties to to design course content, develop rubrics, and assess student work; or equivalent college-level teaching experience.
  • Highly effective written communications with demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Highly effective verbal communication skills, with demonstrated skill in tact and diplomacy. Strong active listening ability.
  • Outstanding administrative, project management and organizational skills. Ability to set priorities that accurately reflect the relative, evolving importance of job responsibilities.
  • Prior experience modeling practices that foster equity, inclusion, and integrity within diverse communities of students, staff, and faculty; experience infusing equity and inclusion as well as restorative approaches into daily work.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices in academic integrity, including experience interpreting policies and procedures and demonstrated skill in training others to do the same.
  • Strong critical thinking and reasoning abilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Education Policy or related field; and/or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Advanced conflict resolution and demonstrated experience in restorative justice facilitation, approaches, and training.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
