Position description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of California, Davis, invites applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor of Teaching. This position is as an Academic Senate faculty member eligible for promotion to "Security of Employment," which is analogous to tenure.

The successful candidate is expected to have the potential to excel in teaching as demonstrated by their teaching experience (instructor or teaching assistant), professional development history, or other teaching-focused activities/interests. They will be expected to develop and implement innovative, effective, and inclusive pedagogical practices both within and outside of the classroom. Efforts to include groups who are underrepresented or come from historically marginalized communities are especially valued. The candidate must have the interest and ability to collaborate and contribute significantly to undergraduate teaching and mentoring missions of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. They will be expected to share effective teaching practices with other department faculty.

We are looking for a candidate who has strengths in the fundamentals of civil and environmental engineering (including ability to teach Statics and Mechanics of Materials courses) and who is enthusiastic to develop and bring innovative pedagogical practices and educational frameworks into these and other courses. We also seek in a candidate a level of practical engineering knowledge that would enhance our senior design efforts. Potential additional strengths include the ability to teach other courses across the undergraduate Structural Engineering curriculum, or any other civil engineering courses. While teaching potential is a major consideration, candidates will also be expected to demonstrate potential for professional and scholarly achievement and activities, university and public service, and inclusive excellence. Scholarship may focus in, but is not limited to, the areas of engineering education, scholarship of teaching, program assessment, and integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into civil engineering curriculum.

Our CEE department includes 38 faculty and 160 graduate students, obtained $16.7M in research funding in 2022, and is ranked among the top R1 universities in Civil Engineering (ranked 11th in US News & World Report 2024 rankings). We hired our first professor of teaching series faculty member in 2015 who successfully attained security (analogous to tenure) in 2019. There are 7 professor of teaching series positions in the UC Davis College of Engineering. The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education. Applicant's record of or potential for engagement and activities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be part of the overall evaluation of the candidate's qualifications for a faculty appointment. Applicants will be reviewed based on their achievement relative to opportunity.

Appointment will be as an academic year (9-month) assistant professor of teaching. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience. A reasonable estimated salary range for this position is $127,300-$137,300 inclusive of the salary scale and off-scale salary components.

Applicants must have earned one of their degrees in civil engineering or a closely related field, with a preference for those whose record demonstrates a strong background in structural engineering/structural mechanics. They must have a PhD in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Engineering Education, or a closely related field by the time of hire. Participation in department, college, and university service as a member of UC Davis Division of the Academic Senate is an expectation under the faculty shared governance model.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • PhD in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Engineering Education or have advanced to candidacy in a PhD program in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering Education, or a closely related field

  • Candidates with a PhD in Engineering Education must have at least one advanced degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.


Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • Applicants must have earned a PhD or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a closely related field by date of hire
  • Ability to teach fundamental civil engineering courses, especially Statics, Mechanics of Materials, and Structural Analysis.
  • Technical expertise in structural engineering or structural mechanics demonstrated through education or work experience.
  • Potential for excellence in student mentoring, advising, and teaching of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Potential for developing innovative, inclusive, and effective curriculum.
  • Potential for scholarship centered on engineering pedagogy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an eagerness to collaborate in a collegial team atmosphere, including consulting with other faculty about their courses.
  • Understanding of DEI barriers embedded in engineering and plans for addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in engineering.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

  • Evidence of professional development to improve teaching effectiveness and understanding of pedagogical practices.
  • Demonstrated experience, productivity, and creativity in scholarship in engineering education/pedagogy.
  • Ability to teach one or more of the core graduate courses in the Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics area.
  • Potential for engagement in program minors: Construction Engineering and Management and Sustainability in the Built Environment
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with, recruit, lead, and manage a diverse team on initiatives related to undergraduate education.
  • Demonstrated experience with ABET assessment/program-level assessment.
  • Evidence of or potential for leadership in increasing equity and social justice in engineering within or outside the formal curriculum.
  • Demonstrated willingness to engage and build relationships with external partners (within and external to the university) to increase opportunities for undergraduate students both in and outside the classroom.
  • Design experience that will support the teaching of the Senior Design course (ECI 193)
