Job Summary

The EH&S Campus Program employs the Departmental Safety Advisor (DSA) concept to coordinate safety activities with each department on campus. The DSA works closely with the department, principal investigators, laboratory supervisors, and managers to ensure compliance with safety regulations. The DSA monitors activities involving the use of all hazardous materials to ensure all policies and procedures are adhered to. Also, the DSA is available for consultation in the design of experiments and facilities as regards environmental health and safety issues and requirements. The DSA is also responsible for ensuring a safe work environment for administrative departments and facilities management. This includes but is not limited to fire and life safety, ergonomics, injury prevention, and accident investigations. The DSA assists in developing programs and completing projects to improve health and safety for the University.

The EH&S Campus Program assists the UCSF Technical Safety Committee and the Safety Officers with the development of policies and procedures and review of use authorizations regarding the safe use of hazardous materials.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $84,600 - $126,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Office of Environment, Health and Safety Department provides technical support and services for UCSF and UCSF Medical Center in the following specialties: hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, ergonomics, fire and life safety, radiation safety, chemical safety, biological safety, laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, food facility safety, controlled substance and others.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area with a minimum of 3 years of prior experience working in Environment, Health and Safety field and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Thorough knowledge / understanding of specific EH&S field(s) including related laws and regulations; and general knowledge / understanding of all EH&S fields
  • Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related safety standards and guidelines (i.e.Cal-OSHA reporting, SF Department of Public Health, etc.)
  • Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints
  • Demonstrated skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities with specialized reporting software
  • Ability to lead and facilitate system-wide workgroup efforts

Preferred Qualifications


  • 5 years of experience
  • Prior laboratory experience in academic setting
  • Professional certification - Certified Safety Professional (CSA); Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
