Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or related discipline.
  • At least 3 to 5 years of related experience.

License/Certification Required
Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as CIH or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment is strongly preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience serving as a college or university Industrial Hygienist, conducting indoor air quality surveys, and performing a variety of duties related to occupational health and safety.
  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The primary purpose of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management Office is to develop and manage comprehensive environmental health, safety, and emergency management programs for the University.

The primary role of the Industrial Hygiene Manager is to provide technical assistance and expertise for the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management Office in support of the unit and university missions. This position is directly responsible for developing and administering a university-wide industrial hygiene program that meets applicable local, state, and federal requirements. Specializes in anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of applicable industrial hygiene issues. Provides consultative support to campus stakeholders in addressing occupational health-related matters. Specific programs of responsibility include Indoor Air Quality, Laboratory Safety, Hazard Communication, Hearing Conservation, and Respiratory Protection. This position supervises the laboratory safety coordinator.

Program Management

  • Develop and manage an effective industrial hygiene program under the general guidance of the assistant director, in support of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management mission.
  • Supervise the laboratory safety program.
  • Develop new programs to address new or evolving trends, best practices, or to ensure compliance.
  • Ability to utilize significant technical expertise to serve as Subject Matter Expert in developing and implementing new or original training programs.
  • Assists with the comprehensive radiation safety program.
  • Ability to provide training over a variety of platforms/methods to include in-person and online.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of training programs.
  • Develop and implement appropriate safety and health policies and procedures to ensure university compliance, as well as compliance among individual university departments.
  • Ability to remain current on industry trends and make appropriate changes to the program area of responsibility.
  • Coordinate with other industry professionals, consultants, and vendors to provide appropriate industrial hygiene services on campus.


Technical Expertise

  • Ability to collect and analyze data using industrial hygiene equipment.
  • Provide technical information and expertise to university constituents on industrial hygiene matters.
  • Analyze and interpret data. Conduct program assessments, along with health and safety assessments.
  • Ability to recommend and implement appropriate procedures or practices to address safety and health concerns.
  • Ability to conduct investigations on complex safety and health matters as related to industrial hygiene.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and understanding of environmental health & safety principles, practices, and equipment to determine if proper methods and procedures are utilized, as well as to assure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Provide training and educational resources on environmental health and safety.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate complex data, reports, and other investigative findings to a diverse community with varying levels of health and safety knowledge.
  • Ability to communicate corrective actions in an effective manner to various entities and individuals across campus.
  • Ability to formulate written and verbal reports to communicate findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
  • Develop appropriate reports for a wide range of audiences.

Supervisory
  • Provide guidance and effective supervision to employees reporting to this position.
