In addition, UNM offers educational benefits through the tuition remission and dependent education programs. See the Benefits home page for more information. Position Summary The University of New Mexico NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Department of Medicine, Division of Molecular Medicine, at the UNM School of Medicine invite applications for faculty position in cancer-focused Computational Biology, Integrative Modeling, and Cancer Bioinformatics. This is an Open Rank, Open Track position. We seek highly interactive faculty who are developing strong track records of academic accomplishment including peer-reviewed funding and impactful publications in high quality journals, as well as more established senior faculty with sustained records of outstanding scholarly achievements. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to take advantage of large complex data sets, including but not limited to human genome sequencing and epigenetic data sets from multiple platforms and model systems; network reconstruction from transcriptomics and proteomics; high-resolution cellular, animal and human imaging data sets at multiple scales; and population science data (surveillance, cancer disparity patterns, epidemiology, behavioral, exposure) from large retrospective and prospective population cohorts. Many data sets include highly annotated patient information, including clinical and laboratory-generated correlative data, means of therapeutic intervention, and outcome, facilitating the development of computational models and algorithms predictive of response. Successful candidates will nucleate interdisciplinary interactions between scientists and physicians at the UNMCCC and UNM School of Medicine with our partnering institutions, including Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories with their large scale massively parallel computing infrastructure and outstanding teams of computational and informatics scientists. These collaborative interactions further enhance our ability to conduct computational, informatics, and systems biology research, inform clinical intervention strategies, and develop cutting-edge training programs for the next generation of cancer biologists and computational scientists. Successful applicants will also benefit from collaboration with several unique centers and programs at the UNMCCC including: The Molecular Discovery and High Throughput Target Screening Center (nmmlsc.health.unm.edu); one of the nation's 6 Chemical Biology Consortium Centers of Excellence in The NCI NExT Program; and The New Mexico Center for the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling (stmc.health.unm.edu), one of 13 NIH-funded National Centers for Systems Biology. The UNMCCC is also a member of the ORIEN National Network of NCI Cancer Centers engaged in cancer sequencing, precision oncology, data sharing, cancer clinical trials and collaborative research (http://oriencancer.org/). Significant resources, including excellent salaries, comprehensive start-up packages, and endowed positions, are available. Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with accomplishments. The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its more than 120 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico's cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated approximately 14,000 patients in about 100,000 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of nearly 400 patients participated in cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 100 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $35.7 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published nearly 1000 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 500 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery.
