Job Information

Florida International University's Freshwater Resource Division at the Institute of Environment is seeking to fill one Postdoctoral Associate position in the area of analytical environmental chemistry- mass spectrometry.

The primary objective of the Postdoctoral Associate will be to oversee the operations of the analytical facility at the Biscayne Bay Campus, being involved in sample custody, sample collection, sample preparation steps and develop new analytical methods in the area of organic mass spectrometry with specific emphasis on emerging contaminants and non-targeted analysis (NTA), contributing to the training and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students in traditional and novel analytical techniques for environmental and biological applications. The appointment is for one year but renewable based on performance and funds availability.
The Postdoctoral Associate will be hired to work on the research project aiming at developing and implementing an innovative methodology based on NTA to identify specific chemical tracers of dust and soil exposure by children of different age groups. The proposed work includes the chemical analyses by NTA of indoor dust, soil, water, food, and urine.

Experience in liquid chromatography- high resolution mass spectrometry (specially Thermo Orbitrap), NTA workflows (specially using Compound Discoverer) and data interpretation, and statistics are desired. The instrumentation used will be a Thermo Q-Exactive High Resolution Mass Spectrometry. The Postdoctoral Associate are expected to conduct independent research, lead method development, implementation, training and data analysis and reporting required in support of the project. Other available instruments in the laboratories are LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, GCxGC TOF. The department of Chemistry and Biochemistry also operates the Advanced Mass Spectrometry Facility (ms.fiu.edu), where FT-ICR ion mobility instruments are available. The minimum qualification for a Postdoctoral Associate is a Doctoral Degree and appropriate education and experience.
