The title and pay level of this position will be determined by candidate qualifications and experience. The position will either be filled as a:

- Lab Mechanician. Hiring Salary range: $64,000 to $71,000.

- Sr. Lab Mechanician. Hiring Salary range: $71,000 to $78,000.

SR. LAB MECHANICIAN DESCRIPTION:

Perform mechanical and or welding work in the design, fabrication, assembly, modification and maintenance and repair of specialized equipment and research prototypes from rough ideas or oral information. Complete the fabrication and construction of complicated pieces of apparatus. Operate lathes, milling machines, grinders and drill presses. Fabricate jig and fixtures and use latest CNC machining technology. Fit and assemble various components of projects using a wide variety of materials, both standard and exotic. Utilize blueprints, graphs, drawings and sketches. Operate specialized and standard machine shop equipment. Interact heavily with engineers, researchers and student staff.

SR. LAB MECHANICIAN QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school graduation and six years of metal shop experience and journey level skill in the operation of all standard machine shop equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in facilitative design, fabrication and production of instruments, hardware, and projects for a variety of uses working with minimal guidelines such as rough sketches or oral information about basic design where specific details are developed as fabrication progresses. Knowledge of and experience working in tool design and metallurgy.

  • Knowledge in fields of electronics, optics and vacuum systems.

  • Experience with separate machining characteristics of a wide variety of materials such as: aluminum, plastics, ceramics, copper, stainless steel and brass; comprehensive knowledge of machine shop practices and principles with standard and special machine tools.

  • Understanding of the restrictions of the test environment in which designs are operated.

  • Skilled, as demonstrated by experience, at sheet metal and welding work; assembly, installation, repair and maintenance of specialized apparatus. Skill and ability to heli-arc, arc-weld, silver solder and mig-weld.

  • Working knowledge of and experience using machine shop mathematics.

  • High degree of manual dexterity to perform sub-assemblies at a workbench and work within close tolerances on special shapes.

  • Extensive experience in programming Computer Numerical Control (CNC) lathe and mill machines using Mastercam or G Code softwares.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with diverse groups of people.

  • Knowledge and ability to research and solve problems, use originality and ingenuity to solve fabrication, assembly and installation problems.

  • Knowledge of engineering problems caused by the environment, such as corrosion, metal fatigue and stressing.

LAB MECHANICIAN DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, conceptualize, design and fabricate specialized equipment, components and research prototypes by operating all types of machine tools. Perform journey level mechanical/machinist and/or welding work involved in the fabrication, assembly and modification of specialized equipment and research prototypes. Work with a number of exotic materials. Utilize blueprints, graphs, drawings and sketches. Operate specialized and standard machine shop equipment. Interact heavily with engineers, researchers and student staff. Performs various tasks to support the Shop's safety program including plans meetings, train and instructs staff in the safe and proper operation of shop equipment and tools. Incumbent is responsible for purchasing activities necessary for research machine maintenance, repair and alteration projects. Determine the appropriate method for procurement actions, assist in identifying vendors, research new sources and identify department standards and specific requirements, make recommendations to management and customers.

LAB MECHANICIAN QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Skill and ability to heli-arc, arc-weld, silver solder and mig-weld.

  • Proven knowledge of trade materials; such as aluminum, plastics, ceramics, copper, stainless steel and brass.

  • Proven ability to interact with diverse groups of people within an academic research setting. Knowledge and ability to research and solve problems.

  • Knowledge of engineering problems caused by the environment, such as corrosion, metal fatigue and stressing.

  • Possess a valid California Driver License.

  • Proven ability to design, fabricate and produce instruments, hardware and projects for a variety of uses.

  • Knowledge of tool design and metallurgy.

  • Knowledge of a variety of trade materials; such as aluminum, plastics, ceramics, copper, stainless steel and brass.

  • Ability to use originality and ingenuity to solve fabrication, assembly, and installation problems.

  • Ability to discuss and comprehend researchers needs, with an understanding of the restrictions of the test environment in which design will be operated.

  • Conceptual skills for relating designs to potential machining and welding. Ability to recommend design, material or process alternatives to achieve desired functionality.

  • Possess journey level machinist skills and ability to operate all standard shop equipment and tools.

  • Strong working knowledge of shop practices and machinery principles; special machine tools and safety practices.

  • Manual dexterity to perform subassemblies at a workbench.

  • Working knowledge of machine shop mathematics.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • DOJ/FBI background clearances and DMV check required prior to hire.

  • Must possess and maintain valid CA Driver License and participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

  • Must be able to work overtime.

  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job which include; lifting of heavy objects and using manual dexterity to perform sub-assemblies at a workbench and work within close tolerances on special shapes. Ability to stand for long periods of time.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $71,034 - $85,754 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $34.02 - $41.07

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
