Project/Unit Description

The Antenna Systems Division works on projects involving all portions of modern antennas - from analog RF at the radiator to digital beams. The division engages in the design, production, and testing of prototype radar and communications antennas for various sponsors, mostly in the DOD community. The division currently has both large and small projects ranging from prototyping a deployable active, electronically scanned radar to developing RFICs.

Our research faculty have expertise in:
* Phased array antenna technology
* Radar system antennas
* Antenna and RF PCB modeling and simulation
* Antenna measurement in far-field and near-field ranges
* RF design and simulation software: HFSS, FEKO, CST, ADS, Cadence, XPATCH, Modelica, NEC, Altium, Simulink, Matlab
* Working with all TRL levels of antenna systems


Job Purpose

RF/Radar Systems Engineers work with a team to perform advanced system and algorithm development using established systems engineering approaches. Based on detailed trade studies and requirements analyses, radar systems engineers develop solutions to satisfy system requirements and perform functions related to all aspects of radar system design. These functions include the development of the complete architectural design of radar systems, investigation and development of new algorithms to advance key sensor capabilities by leveraging signal processing techniques and novel waveform development, development of detailed simulations of algorithms and systems for design verification or to facilitate operational software development, the design of sensor modes that maximize sensor performance, the collection and analysis of data from laboratory or flight tests, and formal verification that the final design solution meet all system requirements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct refined RF subsystem and system design studies, testing plans, and analysis of requirements into detailed performance design criteria in conjunction with the technical lead.
  • Design and build templates to assist SMEs in providing critical system information.
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for RF subsystems and systems of low complexity.
  • Define/refine internal and external interfaces for RF subsystems and systems.
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing design description or performance as defined by requirements.


Additional Responsibilities

  • Phased array design, modeling, and simulation
  • Incorporation of system-level requirements into phased array designs and operation
  • Testing of antenna subsystems up to full-scale


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Modeling and simulation experience with MATLAB (experience with computational electromagnetic codes like HFSS and FEKO a plus)
  • Antenna design knowledge
  • Experience with antenna-related hardware
  • Phased array antenna theory and hardware knowledge


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Expertise in electromagnetic theory
  • Knowledge of digital beamforming and adaptive signal processing
  • Antenna test, measurement, and integration experience
  • Working knowledge of radar system function

Education and Length of Experience

This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

  • 0 years of related experience with a Masters' degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math, Radar Engineering or related fields.
