This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Karman line - the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will be the first line of support for technical discrepancies on the pneumatic and cryogenic propellant subsystems for the New Shepard launch vehicle. In preparation for a launch, you'll work closely with the vehicle maintenance team to diagnose discrepancies and identify corrective actions as well as author and review maintenance procedures. During launch operations you'll provide the real-time engineering to the flight controllers on your subsystems.

Being a standout colleague is a must; you will collaborate across team interfaces to understand and overcome logistics, supply chain, and resource challenges to deliver mission-ready vehicles. The job can be based either in Kent, WA with travel (25-50%) to our launch site in Texas or based 100% in Van Horn, TX with occasional travel to Kent, WA.

Van Horn Specific information (If located at the Van Horn, TX location)

Being at the heart of Blue Origin operations, the West Texas Site in Van Horn, TX offers eligible employee's additional attractive financial incentives to supplement their competitive base earnings, including a living allowance and relocation assistance. Eligibility for these additional benefits is based on the employee's ability to permanently relocate to Van Horn, TX, or travel to Van Horn from another Blue location a minimum of 50% of the time.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical expertise on the pneumatics and cryogenic propellant subsystems of the New Shepard vehicle and related ground support equipment (GSE).

  • Perform real-time engineering support during launch operations.

  • Support maintenance activities for New Shepard as required leading up to a launch.

  • Disposition and investigate root cause of vehicle discrepancies.

  • Support vehicle managers in assessing technical risk for readiness leading into a launch.

  • Perform post-flight data reviews and tracking of all resulting anomalies.

  • Author processes and procedures for launch operations as well as maintenance activities.

  • Support integrated hardware testing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or equivalent.

  • 2+ years of relevant experience, as described below.

  • Experience with operating and diagnosing fluids systems and hardware.

  • Working knowledge of fluid systems and components such as valves, filters, regulators, fittings, and sensors.

  • Aptitude to develop deep, system-level knowledge.

  • Able to remain composed and focused while working in a dynamic environment on launch days.

  • Capacity to identify and resolve discrepancies/anomalies while performing Engineering Back Room (EBR) role.

  • Hands-on experience with pneumatic and/or cryogenic component and system level testing with a strong safety record.

  • Strong coordination and project management skills, in order to track, manage and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks.

  • Excellent digital literacy with the ability to rapidly learn and use a variety of software tools as needed.

  • Proven familiarity with data reduction and analysis.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills that foster positive professional relationships.

  • Passion for spaceflight and space exploration.

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with engineering support of field operations.

  • Familiarity with pneumatic and cryogenic system and component standards.

  • Experience with Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).

  • Experience with risk assessment, management, and mitigation.

  • Fluid system modeling and analysis experience.

  • Mechanical and/or fluid system design experience.

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $89,820.00-$125,748.00

Other site ranges may differ

Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
