Job Summary:



The Duerkop laboratory, located in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, is recruiting a motivated postdoctoral fellow to work on a project aimed to understand the molecular interactions of phages with their host bacteria. The candidate should have expertise in bacteriology or virology, and molecular methods of DNA manipulation. Additionally, some training in protein biochemistry, animal models, and bioinformatics is preferred. The successful candidate will work with the principal investigator Dr. Breck Duerkop to develop independent research directions stemming from NIH funded projects: https://reporter.nih.gov/search/2HyjuT5xZkCYPxXCGDpPQA/project-details/10935986

https://reporter.nih.gov/search/2HyjuT5xZkCYPxXCGDpPQA/project-details/10810995 The successful candidate will be expected to apply for external funding, prepare presentations, and manuscripts for publication in collaboration with Dr. Duerkop and lab members.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Understand the biology of phages and their bacterial hosts
  • Design next generation DNA sequencing experiments and implement the computational tools required to analyze these data
  • Be able to work independently and initiate new projects within the scope of the lab's research interests
  • Mentor and train graduate students, laboratory technicians, and other researchers
  • Represent the lab at scientific meetings, symposiums, and conferences within and outside the institution
  • Establish and maintain inter- and intra-university collaborations

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



  • PhD degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field prior to starting this position. Candidates in the final stages of completing their doctoral level degree are eligible to apply.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Strong publication record in a peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Experience working with bacteria
  • Experience with molecular cloning
  • Experience in next-generation DNA sequencing and analysis
  • Experience working with mice (if no prior experience, be willing to work with mice)


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Proficient knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Interpret and master complex research protocol information
  • Develop new protocols
  • Effectively troubleshoot

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$61,008 or commensurate with postdoc experience

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
