Johns Hopkins University is seeking a highly motivated individual to work as a Campus Police Investigator. Campus Police Investigators work in a team environment and work with surrounding law enforcement agencies as well as various university departments. The Campus Police Investigator reports to the Campus Police Investigations Lieutenant.

Incumbent will conduct criminal investigations, i.e., property and person crimes, threats, harassment, incidents and/or allegations of wrongdoing or inappropriate behavior.

The working hours are from 11:30 am till 8:00 pm.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Investigator will coordinate and conduct joint investigations and/or events with city, state, federal and other law enforcement agencies as deemed necessary.
  • Assist in the prosecution of all cases assigned; and testify in subsequent court proceedings.
  • Assist crime victims, especially students, in dealing with the Criminal Justice System.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently conduct criminal investigations and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with students, faculty, staff and visitors on and off campus.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, schedule, and supervise security personnel for university events/functions.
  • Conduct security surveys for properties owned by the university or for students residing in off campus housing.
  • Assist in the administration of the Document Management System (PowerDMS).
  • Compile, analyze, and distribute statistical data as needed for operational purposes and use pc for word processing, database entry, and spreadsheets.
  • Assist with special operations, i.e., dignitary protection.
  • Will maintain, install, and implement all covert electronic equipment and evidentiary material (including videotapes, photographs, etc.).
  • Position requires periodic evening and weekend assignments, primarily for handling dignitary assignments, special events, and the Neighborhood Walkers on Patrol program.

Other Requirements

  • Valid state driver's license required.
  • Must pass pre-employment background check and successfully complete a physical/health screening examination by the Office of Occupational Health and Safety, which includes a drug screening; successfully meet and maintain Public Safety physical requirements.
  • Position is a plain-clothes assignment, however, at times may be required to wear a uniform and may involve shift work.
  • Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and officers must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance, walk, and run.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including automobiles, vans, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc.; make arrests when necessary; run moderate distances and/or go up and/or down flights of steps; read, interpret, and understand University policies and procedures; withstand exposure to inclement weather.
  • Must be able to become certified as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland and must comply with the Scope of Commission per MD Public Safety Article Section 3-307.
  • Application for a special police officer commission will be made after hire and during the initial training period.
  • The University will cover any expenses related to the application for the commission and permit.
  • Denial by the Maryland State Police of a commission or permit, or subsequent revocation of those privileges, may result in termination.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Three (3) years' experience in a law enforcement related field (city, county, state, university, federal agency).
  • One (1) year of law enforcement experience investigating complex assignments to include experience with case preparation, crime scene preservation, and evidence.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Business, Liberal Arts, or Social Sciences discipline or a combination of university credits and law enforcement work experience.

Starting Salary Range: $21.25 - $36.90 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
