Individual responsible for the accurate administration of the UnitedHealth Group's qualified and nonqualified retirement plans of our acquired companies; ensures administrative processes, procedures and controls facilitate effective administration and service delivery. Responsible for program compliance with company policies and controls, and with the laws, regulations and rules issued or enforced by state, federal and foreign regulatory authorities on the subject of program administration, reporting, disclosures and filing requirements.

Position in this function develops, executes, and supervises projects in partnership with human capital, legal, finance, accounting, payroll, communications, information technology, and other company professionals.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Responsible for the accurate administration of acquired domestic qualified and nonqualified retirement plans through third-party record keepers, trustees, actuaries and consultants
  • Oversee daily administrative activities; provide guidance and work direction to Retirement Analysts
  • Responsible for working with multiple payroll providers and performing reconciliation between payroll and amounts posted to retirement plans. Review timeliness of contribution and loan repayment deposits and calculate lost earnings correction for late deposits. Review payroll pay codes to ensure correct eligible compensation as defined in the plan document
  • Establish, maintain and foster relationships with third-party record keepers, trustees, actuaries, consultants and internal businesses partners
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and controls, and with the laws, regulations and rules issued or enforced by state, Federal and foreign regulatory authorities on the subject of program administration, reporting, disclosure and filing requirements
  • Ensure program policies, procedures, and provisions are documented, effective and followed. Recommend and implement changes to reduce incidence of error
  • Resolve issues. Ensures consistent application of provisions and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Escalates issues to management team as needed to assure prompt and accurate resolution. Identifies root cause of issues and leads issue resolution efforts
  • Oversees the preparation and submission of IRS/DOL filings; assists with the preparation, review and distribution of plan notices
  • Oversees non-discrimination testing activities including requesting, reviewing and reconciling census data to master control totals used for testing
  • Main point of contact for internal and external audits. Will be responsible for attending all meetings and pulling required information for the auditors as well as working with the Finance team in creating the financial statements
  • Ensure plan documents and materials are timely and accurately amended
  • Approves payment of plan expenses and use of forfeitures
  • Collaborates with the Retirement Director on the implementation of new plans, program features and changes to plans and/or administrative procedures
  • Oversees the merger of acquired plans into the core UnitedHealth Group retirement plans or transition of acquired plan to the UHG Master Trust
  • Interacts with third-party vendors and internal team to ensure appropriate levels of performance. Periodically reviews internal and third party activities for quality
  • Reviews communication drafts for accuracy, detail and completeness
  • Responsible for plan reporting and analysis
  • Prepares documentation of change needs and assists with the review and testing of related materials and systems
  • Participates in retirement team special projects
  • Stays to date on trends and developments related to qualified

Required Qualifications:



  • 4+ years benefit plan experience: including plan sponsor, consulting, or administration experience with qualified retirement plans
  • Extensive 401k plan administration experience within a recordkeeping organization
  • Experience managing outsourced benefits service providers or within an outsourced benefits service provider
  • Technical knowledge of administrative practices and all pertinent federal and state regulations affecting retirement programs



Preferred Requirements



  • Professional designation (CEBS)
  • Experience in a complex matrixed Fortune 100 organization
  • Experience with plan mergers and/or moving retirement plans from one recordkeeper to another
  • Experience working with annual 401(k) plan audits and 5500 filings
  • Experience working with annual non-discrimination testing

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Washington, or Washington, D.C. Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $88,000 to $173,200 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
