Position Summary
This recruitment is for two (2) UNC Police Supervisor position(s). By applying, you will be considered for both (2) position(s): 00031353 and 00058669

The main purpose of the UNC Public Safety Supervisor position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through law enforcement and crime prevention. This position serves in a supervisory capacity in Uniform Patrol or as a senior criminal investigator in a plainclothes assignment. May also serve in other advanced specialized roles which require typically plainclothes assignments at the discretion of the agency head. A minimum of an Associate's degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires.

Public Safety Supervisor I: A minimum of an Associate's degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience.

Public Safety Supervisor II: A minimum of an Associate's degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Positions at this level require 3 years' experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency {Eligible for UNC System Lateral Hires Only}

Public Safety Supervisor III: A minimum of an Associate's degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Positions at this level require 6 years' experience as a Police Supervisor with the agency {Eligible for UNC System Lateral Hires Only}
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
A minimum of an Associate's degree (or 60 hours of college credit) and 4 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out-of-state lateral hires. At the agency heads discretion, up to 2 additional years of sworn law enforcement experience may be preferred.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment; possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License; pass in-depth background investigation, which includes driver's history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening, and physical. All newly-hired public safety officers are subject to a 24-month probation period. The selected candidate must successfully complete a three-week department orientation course and a twelve-week department field training program during probationary period. This person must have the demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner. This position also requires the demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as the demonstrated ability to perform supervisory duties and serve as the unit supervisor in the absence or unavailability of the Lieutenant. This person must have the ability to act and direct the action of others quickly and intelligently in emergency situations. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the Department's mission, vision, core values, as well as University Emergency Response Policies and effectively apply those standards to advance the Department's goals and mission. The incumbent will actively participate in the annual Department goal process while effectively addressing problems associated with crime, fear of crime, and quality of life issues through sound problem solving methods and properly documenting efforts. Candidate should have a sound knowledge base to direct law enforcement responses in emergency situations on campus. This position may be required to assist shift supervisor, to include managing their squad in the absence of the Lieutenant.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A minimum of 1 year of law enforcement experience in a University campus setting is also preferred, but not required. Prefer candidate that has law enforcement supervisory experience.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Position involves being able to subdue resisting suspects and effect forcible arrests; must be able to defend oneself; operating a law enforcement vehicle under emergency conditions during day and night; pursuing fleeing suspects; performing searches of people and buildings involving feeling and detecting objects; exercising independent judgment in determining when to use force and to what degree; enduring verbal and mental abuse; comprehending legal documents including citations, affidavits, and warrants; commanding emergency personnel at accidents, emergencies, and disasters. Candidate must meet physical and psychological requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Education and Standards Commission.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
