Carter G. Phillips Center for Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy

Northwestern Pritzker School of Law invites applications for a full-time clinical faculty position to serve as the Director of the Carter G. Phillips Center for Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy, a clinical program housed within the Bluhm Legal Clinic. The expected start date for this position is July 2025. The faculty appointment may be as a Clinical Professor of Law, Associate Clinical Professor of Law, or Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, at a level commensurate with experience and qualifications. We seek applicants for this position with distinguished academic and practice experience as well as a demonstrated track record of directing, developing, and teaching appellate advocacy or related courses.

The Carter G. Phillips Center for Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy has been a core part of the Bluhm Legal Clinic for nearly twenty years. The Center is operated in partnership with attorneys fromSidley Austin LLP and serves the Northwestern Pritzker Law community and the general public through three primary avenues.

  • First, the Center offers two year-long clinical courses which the Director is expected to teach: the Federal Appellate Litigation Clinic and theCarter G. Phillips/Sidley Austin LLP Supreme Court Clinic.
  • Second, the Center operates a Supreme Court moot program, which offers counsel appearing before the Supreme Court an opportunity to present and refine their strategies in advance of argument.
  • Third, the Center organizes a variety of research, policy, and other events for the Northwestern Pritzker Law community. This includes supervising students seeking to pursue anAppellate Concentration; inviting guest speakers to Chicago, including Justices of the Supreme Court; and publishing relevant scholarship in law reviews.

Role and Responsibilities

The Director will provide leadership to the range of programs and activities carried out by the Center. The Director will teach the Federal Appellate Litigation clinical course and co-teach the Supreme Court clinic along with adjunct faculty from Sidley Austin. Co-teaching the Supreme Court clinic includes the following responsibilities: assisting in bringing in new matters; developing strategies for writing briefs and other filings on behalf of the Clinic's clients; reviewing the Clinic students' drafts and other work product; and producing briefs and other filings suitable for filing in the U.S. Supreme Court. The Director will also play an active role in Bluhm Legal Clinic and Law School meetings, events and committee work, with an eye to fostering collaboration where possible.

Qualifications

The person selected for this position must have a JD; at least three years of experience in directly relevant practice areas; excellent written and oral communication skills; experience supervising law students, law student interns, or junior lawyers in clinical legal education or professional settings; experience supervising student moot court teams; and enthusiasm for collaborating in departmental and law school committee work.

Requisite attributes include: demonstrated abilities to inspire others and to work collaboratively, creatively, and constructively. The candidate must also have strong organizational skills and be recognized as a respected member of the clinical community and/or relevant professional community. This person should have a passion for teaching and learning as well as for the development of students and academic programs. The candidate must have the ability to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process. The candidate must also have the ability to successfully interact with students, other educators and educational institution representatives, and the general public in a professional manner.

This is an open rank search. The expected base pay based on rank is as follows:

Assistant Professor: $130,000 - $140,000

Associate Professor: $140,000 - $150,000

Professor: $150,000 - $165,000

This base pay range is for a twelve-month academic appointment and is subject to negotiation. Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
