Position Description

The School of Music in the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Flute to begin September 1, 2025.

About the College

The J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts comprises the School of Art, the School of Music, and the School of Theatre & Dance. With more than 120 faculty members and approximately 1,050 students, the College offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including the terminal M.F.A., D.M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Our unique Ph.D. program in Fine Arts provides interdisciplinary education for students interested in engaging with multiple art forms or combining methodologies from the arts and sciences or arts and humanities. About the Department/School/Area

The School of Music is NASM accredited and offers the B.A. in Music, the B.M. in Music with concentrations in Music Education, Composition, Performance, and Theory, the M.M. in Music Education, the M.M. in Music with concentrations in Composition, Conducting, Music Theory, Musicology, Piano Pedagogy, and Performance, the D.M.A. with tracks in Composition, Conducting, Performance, and Piano Pedagogy, the Ph.D. in Music Education, the Ph.D. in Fine Arts with concentrations in Arts Administration, Music Education, Musicology, and Music Theory, the Undergraduate Minor in Music, Undergraduate Certificates in Community Arts Entrepreneurship, Jazz Studies, and World Music, and Graduate Certificates in Early Music Performance Practice, Woodwind Specialty and Piano Pedagogy. A faculty of 61 full-time professors serves approximately 335 undergraduate students and 175 students involved in graduate study. Major/Essential Functions

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a diverse student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Faculty Qualifications

1. An earned doctorate in flute performance or a closely related field is required before the position's start date.
2. Evidence of professional performance experience and professional activity and/or a research profile that demonstrates the ability to emerge as a leader in the field of flute performance.
3. Evidence of successful teaching of flute.
4. A comprehensive understanding of current research in flute and music performance.
5. Ability to recruit and retain a studio of undergraduate and graduate students.
6. Ability to perform service duties including, but not limited to, recruiting, curricular review, programmatic assessment, and committee membership.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

1. Ability to teach a variety of flute and woodwind-related subjects, including graduate-level courses in literature and pedagogy, as well as chamber music, ensembles, and other courses in music
2. Successful teaching at the university level
3. Excellent organization and communication skills, demonstrating an ability to oversee a complex studio schedule
4. Ability and desire to direct graduate research, including advising master's and doctoral students and guiding the preparation and review of graduate-level projects (i.e., recitals, research documents, comprehensive exams)
5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and outside the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally
