JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a Facilities Designer to join our Facilities Operations & Maintenance Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Lead the development of discipline specific project designs; formulate design standards

  • Participate in feasibility studies and site selection for projects

  • Coordinate issues of zoning and common interest with neighboring communities and municipalities

  • Perform system design specifications within field of expertise (lighting, roofing, elevator, hardware, plumbing, fire protection systems, etc.) under the supervision of a registered professional within that discipline

  • Review outside designs within the field of expertise to evaluate conformance with University Design and Construction Standards

  • Prepare, update, and modify various drawings and computer graphic displays from information provided or gathered; perform Computer Aided Design (CAD) in accordance with specified CAD standards in support of project design effort

  • Implement current and new state and federal requirements relating to safety requirements, building and fire codes, rules, regulations and specifications, The Americans with Disabilities Act, and any other relevant state or federal agencies

  • Perform life cycle cost comparisons and other cost-based analyses within the field of expertise

  • Estimate costs for projects, develop project approval forms, write construction letters, specifications, purchase orders, and prepare documents for bidding packages

  • Check job conditions for projects under construction or design to gather data and information related to project or design scope; obtain measurements and site data and check project progress

  • May supervise staff members, including hiring, development, and performance management

This position will be filled at the Intermediate professional level. Minimum requirements include an Associate's Degree or higher and 2+ years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • AutoCAD

  • International Building Code

  • Interior Design

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Active government security clearance (Secret)

  • Revit

  • Contracting / Purchasing

  • Archibus

  • Lighting design

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$46,400.00 - $67,300.00
